LSU's Niswanger receives Draddy Trophy

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Louisiana State University senior center Rudy Niswanger became the 16th recipient of the Draddy Trophy on Tuesday night.

Presented by HealthSouth at the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame's 48th Annual Awards Dinner, the Draddy Trophy is often called the "Academic" Heisman and recognizes the individual as the best in the country for combined academic success, football performance and community leadership.

"This is a tremendous honor and I am very proud to accept this outstanding award," Niswanger said. "I want to thank the faculty and staff at LSU as well as the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame for this great honor."

Niswanger started 11 of 12 games for LSU at center this season and has anchored the line for three straight seasons. He was the staring center on the Tigers' 2003 National Championship team.

A team captain and two-time Academic All-American, Niswanger finished his LSU career with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

"I am so proud of Rudy," LSU head coach Les Miles said. "He combines all the outstanding qualities of a student-athlete with all the strengths that this award represents. His work in the classroom, on the football field, and in the community, makes him truly deserving of the honor. He represents the best that college football has to offer and he is an outstanding representative of not only our football team, but LSU and the state of Louisiana."

Previous winners of the Draddy Trophy include Bobby Hoying, Danny Wuerffel, Peyton Manning, Chad Pennington, Kyle Vanden Bosch and Craig Krenzel.

Congrats to AJ Hawk on winning the Rotary Lombardi Trophy. More details on the award can be found in AJ's official thread.

He's only the 6th linebacker to win the award in its 36-year history. Chris Spielman was one of the others, in 1987.

That also makes 6 Lombardi trophies awarded to Buckeyes, the most for any school. Notre Dame and Nebraska have each had 4 winners.

Jim Stillwagon, 1970 (inaugural winner)
John Hicks, 1973
Chris Spielman, 1987
Orlando Pace, 1995
Orlando Pace, 1996 (only 2-time winner)
AJ Hawk, 2005

Although AJ is probably relieved that he doesn't have to travel to NYC, I think it sucks that he didn't get an invite. Win or lose, you have here a Lombardi and Butkus Award Winner (coming soon) who deserves to be sitting next to Bush, Young, and Leinhart.

The only reason Woodson ended up getting an invite, much less the award, was because he became ESPN's personal pet project. Without that kind of obvious targeted attempt, I don't think we'll see another defensive player at the presentation any time soon.

It also helped that Woodson was easily the best player in college football. Not to mention that he single handedly willed his team to a victory over their hated rivals despite being outplayed on offense and defense. Did Manning ever do that?

It sucks to say it but Woodsons Heisman had nothing to do wtih the media. It had to do with being the best player.

An amazing statement considering it's the media that VOTES FOR THE WINNER.

Soooo....before woodson, and since woodson, NO defensive player has been the best?

the play of troy smith before the big game wasnt as good as Woodsons performance before the big game in 1997. And unfortunately season records matter. Smith had 2 losses on a team that was favored in every game. Woodson was undefeated.

Name 1 defensive player who has dominated the defensive side of the ball just as Woodson did and who made plays on special teams as well AND who made plays on offense too.
