Bio: Three-year starter who’s been an All- Conference player since his sophomore campaign. Led the team in receiving as a senior, totaling 97/1,330/15, winning All-American honors as well as the Biletnikoff Award. Junior totals included 85/1138/14.

Positives: Big, physical receiver who breaks games wide open or controls them from the get-go. Quick releasing off the line, boxes out opponents with his frame and easily makes receptions in traffic. Fast down the field, gets vertical then contorts in mid-air for the acrobatic grab. Displays good eye/hand coordination, looks the pass in and extends to offer the quarterback a nice target. Easily beats jams at the line of scrimmage or physically pounds opponents to come away with the ball. Displays open-field running skills after the reception and blocks with solid technique. Runs well laterally and displays the ability to quickly change direction. Sells his routes.

Negatives: Not always mentally on top of his game, loses focus or takes his eye off the ball. Must be more cognizant of becoming the hot receiver in blitz situations.

Analysis: A superior athlete who plays bigger and faster than his computer number, Edwards makes truly amazing plays on the football field with regularity. A terrific red-zone target who creates mismatches, he has an unusually high ratio of touchdown receptions. Worthy of an early first round selection and should have a long and productive NFL career once he learns to focus and give attention to detail.

Bio: Four-year starter and All-Conference quarterback who holds numerous passing records at Akron. Posted 63.6%/2,623/18/8 as a senior.

Positives: Nice-sized passer and a natural, smart leader. Sets up in the pocket with good footwork, remains poised and goes through receiver progressions, buying time for wideouts. Displays good field awareness and very good at finding the open wideout. Throws with an over-the-top delivery displaying zip on the short throws and the ability to quickly get the ball into the intended targets hands. Tough competitor who plays while injured.

Negatives: Steps out of throws on occasion, which adversely affects his accuracy. Possesses a solid arm, yet does not have the gun to drive deep throws.

Analysis: A signal caller who’s displayed progress throughout his college career, Frye offers both the physical and mental intangibles for the next level. More athletic than given credit for and can be used in a variety of passing offenses.

Bio: Three-year starter who posted 33/1/1 as a senior, missing three games with a knee injury. Totaled 51/2/5 as a junior, also averaging 12.1 yards on fourteen punt returns. Set an NCAA record that year returning four punts for touchdowns.

Positives: Athletic cornerback with game impacting skills as a punt returner. Quick-footed off the line, displays a solid backpedal and fluid transitioning to run with opponents. Can flip his hips, quickly breaks on the throw, and does a good job reading receivers’ moves then changing focus to the quarterback. Disciplined, diagnoses the action and picks up assignments in zone. Elusive ball handler tough to bring down returning punts. Slides off defenders and fast in the open field.

Negatives: Lacks top playing strength, gathers into tackles and not very physical. Bites on receivers’ moves and does not always display great timing.

Analysis: After showing progress his first two seasons on the field, Perkins had his development slowed by last year’s injury. Best suited to play backed off the line of scrimmage or in zone coverage. At the very least, a solid first-day pick who should excel as a nickel back and return specialist.

Ht: 6-3 Wt: 262 40: 4.58 Year: 5Sr

Bio: Three-year starter voted All-Conference selection as a senior after posting career numbers of 37/13/7.

Positives: Explosive pass rushing end who also has possibilities at outside linebacker. Gets off the snap with a great first step, plays with leverage and fast off the edge. Effectively uses hand technique to get around blocks, immediately alters his angle of attack and makes plays up and down the line of scrimmage. Fast to the flanks, shows balance and rarely off his feet.

Negatives: Lacks bulk, strength, and easily pushed off the ball by opposing tight ends. Marginally productive on the college level.

Analysis: An athletic prospect with solid size/speed numbers and a player who flashes ability, McMillan has the underlying talents to be used in a variety of ways. Offers growth potential and could eventually develop into a starting right defensive end at the next level, or could be asked to stand up over tackle in a 34 defense. Needs to prove he is more than a onedimensional player to have any shot at the next level, yet offers a good upside.

Bio: Moved into the starting lineup as a freshman and awarded varying degrees of All-Conference honors the past three-years. Finished with career numbers of 91/12.5/1.5 as a senior.

Positives: Hard-working defender who’s displayed a steady line of progress the past three seasons. Quickly diagnoses the action, efficient and takes good angles to the play. Breaks down well bending his knees, strong at the point of attack and wraps up tackling. Disciplined, does not take himself from the action and rarely caught out of position. Chases hard to get involved and tenacious running down opposing ball carriers. Forceful off the edge on the blitz. Adequate skills moving laterally and cutting off the corners from running backs.

Negatives: Tall, lacks a quick change of direction and has difficulty getting through the trash laterally. Stiff and slow regaining his balance off the initial block. Does not possess a great burst of closing speed.

Analysis: Stepping up his play as a senior, Speegle really flourished on the outside in the Lobo’s three-four alignment last year. More of a two-down defender with marginal skills in pass coverage, he offers solid size/speed numbers as well as growth potential, which gives him possibilities standing up over tackle.

Positives: Hard-working interior tackle who effectively stuffs the run. Quickly gets off the snap with a nice first step, uses solid hand technique to protect himself and displays a good head for the ball. Plays with forward lean, stays low to the ground and drives up the field. Commands double teams to prevent him from collapsing the pocket and displays good leg drive. Clogs the middle of the field.

Negatives: Stiff, best in a straight line and not effective laterally. Marginal skills rushing the passer.

Analysis: A prospect who improved his overall technique as a senior, Hoffman has potential as a two gap lineman, if he can make gains in the weight room and add bulk to his frame.

Positives: Big, bruising lineman with excellent size. Blocks with leverage, stays square and strong at the point. Effectively uses both body positioning and angles. Controls opponents once engaged in a block. Keeps his feet moving throughout the action, displays tremendous hand punch and knocks opponents to the ground.

Negatives: Lacks footwork in space, adjustment and does not play with top balance. Bends at the waist which reduces his agility and struggles on the second level. Not very alert.

Analysis: Athletic for a big man, Dunn, offers excellent size potential for the next level yet must improve the finer details of his position. At the very least a solid developmental prospect.

</TD><TD noWrap width=3></TD><TD vAlign=top>Grading The Browns Draft
By Lane Adkins
Date: Apr 24, 2005

Analysis: In Braylon Edwards, the Cleveland Browns have added a playmaker from the wide receiver position that the team has lacked for some time.
</TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=3>
Cleveland Browns
1 (3) Braylon Edwards; WR - Michigan
2 (34) Brodney Pool; S - Oklahoma
3 (67) Charlie Frye; QB -Akron
4 (103) Antonio Perkins; CB - Oklahoma
5 (139) David McMillan; DE - Kansas
6 (176) Nick Speegle; OLB - New Mexico
6 (203) Andrew Hoffman; DT - Virginia
7 (217) Jon Dunn; OT - Virginia Tech

Analysis: In Braylon Edwards, the Cleveland Browns have added a playmaker from the wide receiver position that the team has lacked for some time. The number-one player on the Browns draft board, Edwards immediately improves a Cleveland offense which struggled again in 2004 and should be the focal point in an offense which should improve greatly in the passing game.

Pool is a late first-round talent who has shown a nose for the football. While not being the fastest of defensive backs, he is consistent, makes few mental mistakes, and has shown the ability to play well in coverage, as well as help against the run. Pool will certainly add depth to the Browns defensive backfield and could start in the 2005 season.

Looking for a quarterback to lead the team in the future, Charlie Frye appears to be the choice. He pent hours with Browns personnel guru Phil Savage watching tape and was considered a favorite, along with Jason Campbell from Auburn to be selected by the Browns at some point on the draft’s first-day. He had strong off-season workouts resulting in a significant increase in arm strength, which helped carry him to a higher level. Frye will have an opportunity to learn from veteran Trent Dilfer.

Grade: B+

just a little bit of an interesting side note to the draft... the browns as we all know are looking for players who are quality, high character guys.

That being said there were two guys that the browns picked who have mild character issues... the borwns didn't feel that these guys would pose problems because it was little things

Andrew Hoffman, one of the browns sixth round picks hurt one of his toes on his left foot as a sophmore. He apparently got caught stealing a beer keg and dropped it on one of the toes on his left foot... possible character issue there, kinda funny, but anyways crennel said that it wasn't a big deal especially since it happened when hoffman was a sophmore

The other guy with a slight character issue was 7th round pick OT Jon Dunn... he allegedly tested positive on a drug test and got suspended for a game in 2003

From cleveland.com
Toe story:
When the Browns passed out the bio on Hoffman on Sunday, his injury report in 2001 read, "Suffered a compound dislocation of his left big toe when he was caught stealing a keg of beer and dropped it on his foot."

When Browns coach Romeo Crennel was asked about taking two players with slight blemishes at the end of the draft, he said, "I think it depends on the size of the blemish. If it's just a little, small blemish like a keg on a little toe, it happened when the guy was a [sophomore], that's not too bad. Now if the blemish covers the whole face, we might have to do something about that."

The other player with a slight blemish was tackle Jon Dunn, who was suspended for a game in 2003 for reportedly failing a drug test, according to nfldraftscout.com. The Browns checked him out and felt comfortable it won't be a problem.

That is interesting but I am positive some of the first rounders have issues also. Its all over the NFL.
You mean like hitting people with beer bottles? Of course Vrabel beat the crap out of a guy once outside a bar in Kent and he is a high character guy. I'd probably go after a SCum fan that was giving me shit about losing to SCum as well. I blame Coop. :p

Yeah-- If stealing a keg in college is a character issue that merits not being drafted.. then we've got issues about what constitutes really "bad behavior." (and I'll never get another job as long as I live) The only people who should raise any kid of eyebrow over this, is possibly the people whose beer was stolen.... poor bastards.

Jesus... "Don't draft him, he's got grand theft beer keg on his record... probably stole a funnel too." At Wisconsin, this is probably a standard part of Freshman hazing.

Yeah- I'm not going to get into specifics... but Vrabel had a tendency to be somewhat of a bull in a China shop in Bars... particularly Papa Joe's... Let's just say the Vrabel and some of that crew had a lot of "fun" in that place... sometimes it was Finkes with him... sometimes Greg Belisari... sometimes other guys.

Exclusive: Browns Snare First Rookie Free Agent
By David Carducci
Date: Apr 25, 2005

Within hours of the end of the draft, the Browns signed an intriguing free agent...
</TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=3>
UPDATE 4/25 12:30PM: We have gotten word that Cribbs intends to forego the opportunity with the Browns to attempt to play quarterback with the Washington Redskins. Cribbs had agreed on a deal with Cleveland to try to play at Wide Reciever, but apparently has decided to carve out a future at the position he prefers

The Cleveland Browns are collecting Mid-American Conference quarterbacks. They already had Bowling Green's Josh Harris on the roster as a backup.

On Saturday, they added the University of Akron's Charlie Frye in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft.

Now Kent State's Joshua Cribbs has been added to the mix.

Within an hour of the draft's conclusion, the Browns were on the phone with Cribbs, trying to convince the Golden Flashes' star quarterback to turn down offers from the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers and instead stay and instead sign an un-drafted free agent contract that would keep him close to his college home.

"I decided to sign with Cleveland," said Cribbs. "Some of my family thought it might be a good idea to go somewhere new and get a fresh start. But my agent said I got a lot offers, and he thought Cleveland would be the best place for me now."

Unlike Frye and Harris, Cribbs will not be competing for a job as a quarterback Friday when the Browns rookie minicamp opens in Berea.

"My focus right now is to make the team, and to do that I have to show them I can play wide receiver and help on special teams," said Cribbs.

The athletic 6-foot-1, 192-pound Cribbs has sub 4.5-speed, and should be able to make the transition to receiver at the pro level, but he would still like a chance to play quarterback.

"My agent is pushing to get me some snaps, and it would be great to battle with Josh (Harris) and Charlie (Frye)," said Cribbs. "We battled all through college. Now we are battling again for a (pro job). We are on the same team now, so I'm sure we'll all understand that this is all about competition and trying to make each other better."

Cribbs said he will come to minicamp with a chip on his shoulder that Frye and Harris donever had. Frye and Harris were drafted by NFL teams.

"I want to prove that I should have been drafted, too," said Cribbs. "I have a point to prove, and that's a huge motivator for me. It was a motivator for me coming out of high school when other schools didn't think I could play quarterback, and I ended up setting records at Kent State. Now I want to prove I deserve to play at the next level. I know I have to work at it, and I will do anything they ask me to do."

A Local Linebacker Joins the Roster
By David Carducci
Date: Apr 25, 2005

Bernie's Insiders has been tracking rookie free agents contacted by the Browns and have added many to our roster already. The team will officially announce the signings later this week, but David Carducci already has the story about a linebacker who looking for a big break as a Browns rookie free agent.
</TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=3>

Eric Mahl could be in a better situation than most un-drafted college football players. The Kent State linebacker agreed to sign a rookie free agent contract with the Cleveland Browns Sunday night.

With a new head coach in Cleveland preparing to install a brand new 3-4 defensive scheme and few holdovers on the Browns roster fitting that system, Mahl knows he is walking into a great opportunity.

"They are overhauling their defense, they are short on linebackers, and that could open up a chance for me," said Mahl. "I'm anxious to get to minicamp this weekend and show them what I can do."

The second-team All-Mid-American Conference selection will compete for a job at inside linebacker behind third-year pros Andra Davis and Ben Taylor, who are currently penciled in at the top of Romeo Crennel's depth chart.

"This is even more exciting for me because I grew up just an hour away," said Mahl, who played his high school football in Monroeville. "My parents are all pumped up because they love to travel to games, and the drive to Cleveland is actually shorter for them than the drive to Kent."

Mahl will be reunited in Cleveland with Kent State quarterback Joshua Cribbs, who also agreed to sign a rookie free-agent contract with the Browns Sunday night.

"It's going to be great to have Josh there with me," said Mahl. "We both played in the Las Vegas All-Star Classic after the season, and we got to know each other a whole lot better while we were out there. We've become good friends. And then with (former Akron quarterback) Charlie Frye and (former Bowling Green quarterback) Josh Harris also on the team, there will be plenty of familiar faces from the Mid-American Conference."

The San Diego Chargers, New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers also talked to Mahl about signing as an un-drafted free agent.

Kent State wide receiver Darrell Dowery Jr. and safety Abram Elam were in negotiations with NFL teams at press time. The Washington Redskins were among the teams showing an interest in signing Dowery.
