Defense still wins Championships
Looking ahead to post-season awards, I see the following Bucks getting tabbed with all-American honors....

Nuge - 1st team, no doubt. Probably will be on every list.
- 20/23 FGs, 87%
- 5/6 from 50+ including a 55 yard long (3rd longest in the country)
- 9th among kickers in total scoring, 24th overall
- 3rd in total FG (2 have 21)

AJ Hawk - 1st team.
- 136 tackles, 8 TFL
- 1 sack, 2 INT (should be 3), 1 fumble recovery, 1 fumble forced
- Leads big10 in tackles and is amongst national leaders (couldn't find national tackling stats)

and my surprise pick....

Ted Ginn Jr. - 1st team PR, should be on every list.
- 14 returns, 377 yards.
- 26.9 yards/return is 4.4 yards per return longer than 2nd place!!
- 7th in total return yards, but not in the top 40 in return attempts.
- 82 yard long (8th longest in NCAA)
- 4 TD. OSU season and career record, Big10 season record, ties NCAA season record.
- Best in the country, scoring and average per return. Only limiting factor is that he doesn't have as many attempts as others (which should make him more impressive.


Perhaps the scariest thought is that Ted has the potential to finish his college career as an all-American at THREE positions!!! :yow1:

I not sure they have punt returners on major AA lists (I could be wrong). Also, Ginn won't be AA on defense because he won't be playing defense, at least not full-time.

I was going to argue that Teddy could get some competition from Devin Hester. Then I looked up the stats. I think Ginn being left off would be a travesty...a sham...AND a mockery! (assuming they have returners on the list)

Thanks Mili. I wasn't too sure if they do or not. I know that SI, E$PN, CFBnews, etc. all do have it. I did a little extra research and found that the following all do have a return specialist on their lists...

Good research. I wasn't sure if they did or not, but I stand corrected. Since you're right about return specialists being included, then I agree with your list 100%...Nugent, Hawk, and Ginn all deserve first-team recognition.

I agree. Hawk definitely deserves it, but few saw his interception against MSU. Unless these voters look at highlight reels for each kid (which would be costly and time consuming), I doubt he makes the 1st team. He was strong but not dominant in the UM game, which would have helped his chances.

It would be a discrace if Nugent and Hawk do not make 1st team all american.It also was a discrace the Hawk is not one of the finalist for the Bendarik award either.You can't tell me he isn't one of the best defensive players in america.

Not necessarily. Nugent was AA kicker in 2002 but wasn't the Groza Award winner. Wilhelm was also a first-team AA in 2002 but wasn't, IIRC, a Butkus finalist. Besides, isn't Hawk the leading tackler in the country?

What the fuck is a Grootegoed anyway?

Those stats also leave of that Ginn did this in (really) 8 full games
He is going to re-write the record books I tell you - it could be an untouchable mark he leaves.

hawk is one of the best lb's i have ever seen play the game. he does everything so well no one thing he does seems to jump out at you. i think that factors in to him being easy to overlook. unfortunately i have to agree with dihard here. i doubt he will be an aa this year. can't think of anyone at the position that deserves it more, god knows he is 2x's the lb wilhelm was. but i seriously doubt he will make the cut. he will be named an aa and will likely win the butkus his senior year however.
