Game Thread (2004) Game Six: @ Iowa - 10/16/04 (L, 3-3/0-3)

The only thing that gives me hope here is that Iowa is the only team in the B10 who struggles as much as we do at running the ball. They may actually be worse. We should be able to make them pay for that and give their new QB fits.

On the negative side they have a great defense so its highly unlikely this is the week we magically get better on O.

Probably give the nod in ST to OSU and we are going to be fighting like mad(hopefully) to avoid an unheard of 3rd consecutive loss. On the flip side they are at home and coming off a bye so all that probably is one big wash.

Bottom line then, much like 2003 game, will be TO's and big plays because neither offense will move the ball much imo.

****EDIT*****

OSU NCAA ranks as of 10/9/2004(out of 117)
Iowa's corresponding rankings

Offense
Rushing....#92....Iowa #109
Passing....#70....Iowa #46
Scoring....#76....Iowa #70
Total.......#97....Iowa #91

Defense
Rushing....#67...Iowa #9
Passing....#24...Iowa #92
Scoring....#39...Iowa #48
Total.......#33...Iowa #41

Some other things I notice about Iowa;
-lots of penalties. 8 penalties for 69 ypg good for #95 and #96 in both categories.
-they get sacked a lot, 17 times in 5 games
-they throw a lot of INT's, 6 in 5 games.
-their kicker is 5 of 7 but his longest is 39 yds and has had one blocked.
-their Punt return numbers look real good on paper, #2 in the country, but it all came on 3 long punt returns in the same game. Been completely average other than that.
-their punt coverage defense is excellent, 4.64 ypr something has to give here.

These teams are incredibly similar. Both offenses are piss pore, both defenses are good, but not stellar. I would say that their offense cant move the ball on our D, but I didn't think wisky would be able to move it on us either so its a toss up. Its at home so I will give it to them.

Jax I love your numbers...but those numbers mean nothing right now after going 0-2 to start the B10.

I'm always a glass half full guy, but I truly expect an inspired effort come saturday.

Yeah, that was me for the Wisky game. So I figure I might help the mojo cause and get back to my stats.

Even though I use stats a lot on here, make no mistake, I understand how limited their usefullness is in football. Now in baseball, stats are king. :wink2:

What worries me about this game is that it is on the road. That would not normally bother me considering our recent record against the Hawkeyes. But this year's edition of the Buckeyes, in case you hadn't noticed, is different.

IMHO one of this teams major issues is lack of leadership, especially lack of senior leadership. That usually poses problems when you go on the road.

Hopefully Fox can Buckeye up for the defense. On offense we need someone to emerge as a leader.

time to turn it around

In looking ahead at the schedule for the rest of this season, I definately think this week is gonna be a turning point in our season. Either a turn for the worst or a turn for the better. Because if we can get past Iowa on the road, we come back home to face Indiana. Probably the easiest game on our schedule. With back to back wins going against Penn State & Michigan State, we should be able to build some good momentum before wrapping up the season against tough competitors in Perdue & Michigan......Thats providing that we can get our offense to gel by that time.

just a thought,,
but anyway,

GO BUCKS!

You have to believe that somewhere somehow this year OSU is going to have a break out game and that all those pieces are going to fall into place. The offensive line is going to get all their assignments and sustain blocks, thus opening up more holes for the RB's and giving the QB more time to at least check off once and pick apart the opposing defenses.... Hey a guy can dream can't he ??
