Game Thread (2004) Bowl Game: MasterCard Alamo Bowl - Oklahoma State - 12/29/04 (W, 8-4/4-4)

didn't bobbie reid the elite 11 qb from texas that we were in on go to the other OSU? wonder what he thinks sitting behind a freshman across the field from the buckeyes where he would have had a legit shot at PT this year the way things worked out for zwick.

Yes Robbie Reid is at our OSU. He's sitting behind Woods this year because of an injury incurred during spring practice. With surgery over the summer, Robbie was not ready to play in time for the season. As a result he is redshirting this year and sitting behind Woods and Pena.

Here's to hoping that the Alamo Bowl will only solidify Robbie's decision to be at Oklahoma State.

It was thought by many that Bobby Reid would have been the starter had he stayed healthy.

If I remember correctly, he took a hit from a linebacker in spring practice that dinged up a shoulder. After the aforementioned surgery and rehab a midseason return was rumored. Once he was medically cleared to return to the field, Donovan was getting the job done, so rather than potentially waste a year, Reid opted for the redshirt.

Next spring should be interesting.

Yankee, I am not sure which watch party you are speaking of, but O-STATE.com is having a watch party for the basketball game around 7:00p.m. at the Clarion Riverwalk Hotel, I think it is only $5.00, and that is if there is food served, and there will be a bar. We will be having our extremely fun Tailgate at the Sunset Station parking lot prior to the game. I am sure there will be people around there all day. With the exception of about two and half hours prior to the game we will all be at the walk to support our team as they walk from their hotel to the Alamo Bowl. Just after the walk food will be served, and I will add that it will be very good food. A $10 donation for that, but well worth it, I promise.

Head's Up! (O-State.com and the Alamo Bowl)

Just wanted to give you all a head's up on some upcoming information. As you know, we've had some very nice and knowledgeable posters from the O-State board frequenting our site. Some of our folks have visited there board as well. I've been talking with JWil, who is the columnist for the O-State board, and we've agreed to exchange some articles covering our upcoming bowl game.

At the moment we've settled on trading 3 different articles. The bloggers/writers at Buckeye Planet will send stories covering Ohio State Traditions, Ohio State Season in Review, and the Oklahoma State Game Preview to the O-State board to be posted for their members to read. JWil and the O-State board will send us 3 similar articles, Oklahoma State Traditions, Oklahoma State Season in Review, and the Ohio State Game Preview to be posted here (in the Blog/Article system). It looks as though this will happen this coming Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. If anyone has other ideas, feel free to throw them out. If this goes well, we might try and cover some other topics as well.

I'm excited to cross promote the sites, but also to get an opponents perspective of the Buckeyes. In addition, we'll get some valuable insight to the Oklahoma State season and their traditions. Must reading for anyone going to the Alamo Bowl!

I'd like to thank JWil and the folks at O-State for agreeing to exchange information and I hope everyone here is excited to gain some perspective from our opponents. It should be fun for both our sites. Please be sure to check out their articles and give JWil some feedback. Let's get the conversation started on the Alamo Bowl!

We're really excited about this on my side as well. And really, this is a perfect deal for both sites. Neither side has really seen anything but great posts and good people crossing over. So it's nice to see that this idea is going to happen. I think it'll be a lot of fun.

I'll be writing the stuff from the OKState side and dropping them off on a rolling basis as said above. I'm going to do the traditions one first, followed by the Oklahoma State season review, with the Ohio State preview last. I really think that'll be interesting because we'll get to do homework on each other and report the other side, so that'll be interesting.

And yes, if it is a hit, I'm willing to do more stuff next week.

We have a lot going on at Oklahoma State right now. Our wrestling team is No. 1 and our basketball team is No. 4. My most recent column, "Gateway to Greatness," just came out today. Check it out at www.o-state.com.

Also, our front page is going to have a special box for all the bowl stuff. So when you go over there, look for that Thursday or Friday. Wang will be done with finals then and have time for the addition on the front page.

Anyway, just wanted to add my two cents in this. Please come over this week and next and interact!!! :) Register and just get your comments out there. Both sides are ready for some football talk I bet.

It should be a great deal for both sides.

Buckeye senior class closes in on rare three-feat

Terrific trifecta - Buckeye senior class closes in on rare three-feat

By JON SPENCER Gannett News Service
December 14th, 2004

COLUMBUS -- Archie Griffin won two Heisman trophies, never lost to Michigan and played in four Rose Bowls.

But the 17 seniors on Ohio State's football team have a chance to achieve something against Oklahoma State in the Dec. 29 Alamo Bowl that no OSU senior class has since 1986 and that Griffin was never part of -- three Buckeye bowl victories.

Wait. It gets even better.

Coupled with its 37-21 win over Michigan, a victory over the Cowboys in San Antonio would give this senior class three post-season wins and three wins over the Wolverines, a distinction shared only by the class of '84.

And you thought there was nothing at stake for the Buckeyes when the two OSUs match 7-4 records on a secondary stage.

"It could provide life-long bragging rights," said senior running back Branden Joe, making his fifth bowl trip. "To say you finished your season by beating Michigan and winning a bowl game provides conversation. It's something to be proud of, a reason to hold your head high. When you come back and meet with guys, you can provide good memories.

"You can tell people down the road that you had a winning percentage against Michigan and in bowl games."

Only twice in the last 21 years have the Buckeyes finished a season with wins over Michgian and a bowl opponent -- 1998 and the 2002 national championship season. In that span, they beat their archrival three times in the regular-season finale, but failed to capitalize on that momentum over the holidays.

"My freshman year we were 7-4 going into the bowl and not getting a win was a letdown," senior cornerback Dustin Fox said, referring to the 31-28 Outback Bowl loss to South Carolina in the 2001 season, Jim Tressel's first as head coach.

"Being 7-5 isn't nearly as good as being 8-4. and when you're Ohio State you don't want to finish out of the top 25."

After opening the season ranked ninth in both major polls, a three-game losing streak dropped the Buckeyes to 3-3 and out of the rankings. They resurfaced following the win over Michigan, standing No. 22 in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll and No. 25 in the Associated Press poll.

"This truly is their last opportunity," Tressel said of his seniors. "Sometimes you talk about Senior Day, but when you have a bowl game in front of you, Senior Day doesn't really come until that day.

"They did a great job of making sure their last performance in Ohio Stadium (against Michigan) was one they would remember, and I know they want this bowl performance to be one they'll remember. All of us want to send them out that way as well."

This year's class, which includes 12 fifth-year seniors, has a collective record of 47-15, including a national championship, a Big Ten co-championship and back-to-back BCS bowl wins at the Fiesta.

This marks the first time since the 1993 Holiday Bowl that Ohio State is not playing in a bowl that falls on Jan. 1 or later. That leaves many wondering if the Buckeyes truly are jazzed about playing "off" Broadway, so to speak.

"It's about how you finish," Joe said. "We're going down to Texas to represent Ohio. It's about playing for the fans who have supported us all these years.

"It's an exciting time in our lives. We're fortunate enough to be at a wonderful university. My time here has been nothing but a blessing and I'm looking forward to winning one more game."

Fox, too, wants to be able to remember the Alamo without grimacing.

"The guys understand that any bowl game is a big game and that we're playing a worthy opponent," he said. "It's exciting when you're playing an out-of-conference (Big 12) opponent you're not used to seeing."

O-State.com/BP Alamo Bowl Wallpaper!

Hey Buckeyes we're just a couple weeks away from the showdown in San Antonio, and it's time for a special O-State.com/Buckeye Planet Alamo Bowl wallpaper! Representing the Cowboys on the left side is #20 Vernon Grant, and on the right is the Buckeyes' #7, Ted Ginn Jr. In the foreground is the Mastercard Alamo Bowl logo, with the famous San Antonio mission behind it.

"Is anybody goin' to San Antone?"
