Actually I think that you can go by those stats. They are the same ones that every other team in america uses and all of the trash time td's still count. Im sure that even with those 'extra' tds the '02 defense stacks up very well by the numbers to any team in the country that year.
I wasn't comparing the 2002 defense to other defenses of that year. My point is that our 2002 defense, at least the starting group, was significantly better than the stats show. Also, I wanted to point out that using pure stats to compare our 2002 defense to other year's defenses is not accurate because other years, especially last year, we had fewer blowouts and thus the first team defense was on the field significantly more.
Good post............I covered this exact subject back last fall when things were looking really bleak, and again at the end of the year once we had end of year stats to compare to '01..............the interesting thing to note was that this thread was born because of the fact that '01 and '04 both had first year DC's that were questionable, and now we're back to a new DC, although Heacock has been in the program for a long-time
check it out, i outlined things in a lot more detail, and to add to your point that we could be better in '05, i actually believe it's possible but won't predict it.......i presented my argument in the linked thread.........in the second half of the thread, you'll see the final season stats from '01 and '04, and they are eerily similar, matter of fact we were better in '04 in many facets, and when you consider the returning talent and young depth/competition it's pretty exciting...............also i think it was AKAK that mentioned that going into '02 Smith was our only real known commodity on the DL, the others were regarded as "solid", but we didn't realize how special they were until a few games into the year.........the production from the '01 D-line and the '04 D-line wasn't much different, and i think the potential is there..........and i'm in the camp that thinks our back 7 evens out the disparity between our '02 and '05 d-lines
also some of the questions are starting to be answered such as will somebody step up at TB, and will somebody step up at QB
