#20 Ohio State 78, LSU 76 (final)

Wow, what an amazing game that was today. I was fortunate enough to be there. Funny thing is that I have taken my wife to two games, and one was today, the other was Illinois last season.

You have to love the grit and determination of this squad. They never gave up, you should have seen how pumped Thad Matta was as he ran off the court after the game, it was awesome. The crowd today was very nice sized, and is what it should be from here on out. Although I must say that they were too quiet at times, they definately came to life late in that game.

Great win today Bucks!!

Wow.

Just got back. The last regular season game I've gotten to go to this year was Illinois last year, and I felt like I was watching a rerun. It's amazing how many mistakes (both their own AND the officials...) this team can get away with and still end up with the double-U.

Je'Kel- Didn't have the points he's accustomed to having, but he LED this team. 'Tis unfortunate that the officials didn't help keep the opposing team from holding him and reaching in on him, but in retailiation, he got away with MURDER on a couple of reaching-ins late in the game (one resulted in the steal and the intentional foul) and he could have been called for traveling a few times there too. Needs a little work on his handles- seemed to lose the ball in traffic. He was the hardest working player out there on EITHER team tonight- he's gotta be exhausted. And way to hit the free-throws!

Dials- Baby had NOTHING on him. All he could do was put his hands up and hope Dials would miss it. Defensively, I wish he played more physical, but the officials would not call a travel on Baby if their life depended on it. With that said though, I'm VERY happy that he stayed out of foul trouble. Looked cautious near the end of the game after LSU started putting 3 guys up to block shots. I don't have the stats, but he didn't turn the ball over much (if at all) and he didn't miss too many shots. The free throws were a pleasant surprise too. Great game TD!

Sullinger- Looked like the only guy hustling there in the 1st half. For the first time this season, his height came into play, as LSU came down with rebound after rebound over him, but to his credit, he fought and chased down a few most guys wouldn't have gotten. JJ is nothing but heart, and I love it. Another solid game.

Sylvester- Can't have a game without a couple of REALLY stupid looking turnovers, but you can't argue with how clutch he can be sometimes. He seems to disappear at times during the game (ala Ivan Harris), but he came through when we needed him with some good passes, rebounds, and that deja vu shot. Might be the best game I've seen him play this year.

Butler- Still looks tentative under pressure. Made a couple of errant passes that didn't quite thread the needle. I can see where he's been working on his field goal shooting over the summer (BIG difference between last year and this year), and I'm impressed. His 3 near the end was BEA-utiful, and his D is underrated.

Mayes- Didn't see as much of him as I expected to, but played a decent game. He is NOT afraid to dribble into pressure, which scares me, but he does not lose the handle on that ball. I'd like to see him spell Butler a little more at point guard rather than having Je'Kel spell him, because Je'Kel had some trouble holding onto the ball tonight.

Harris- Did NOT like two of those calls against him tonight. However, I definetly liked seeing him mix it up underneith with the "big uglies". First time I've seen that outta him in a while. I hope he can step his game up next year, because we're gonna need him with Sylvester and Dials leaving.

Lewis- Had a couple REALLY BAD missed assignments on defense. But boy can he jump! Those LSU fellas could really get up there, and Ron was hanging right there with 'em. I want to see him drive the lane more often like he did at BG and like he did tonight. If I'm not mistaken, he was perfect from the line tonight. Is it too early to give him the team's 6th man award?

Terwilliger- Showed his range on a couple of LONG 2's tonight (went 1 for 2- didn't realize he had that kind of range though). Thought he went out too far from the basket to cover his guy too. However, I LOVED the idea (defensively) of putting both Dials AND Twiggy out there at the same time, which is what happend for a short time tonight. I was extremely critical of him early in the season, but I'm slowly feeling a little better about him.

Bell- Didn't play, but looked big and menacing on the bench (like he always does).

-------

Where did that free throw shooting come from? And where did all of those 3-point bricks in the first half come from?? This game wouldn't have been close without our efficiency from the line. Je'Kel and JJ are the heart and soul of this team, and they wouldn't let this team quit. This team has character. The refs... I'm not even gonna start- but believe me, there would be a rant with comparisons to Hightower. LSU is a TOUGH team, and played a GREAT game. My hat is definetly off to those guys- they deserved to win that game. Anywho, 10-0 and OFF to the Big 10!

P.S.- I spied Kosta Koufos sitting behind our bench at the game (couldn't tell whether it was for an official or unofficial visit, but he's hard to miss- being that tall and all). He looked to be enjoying himself, but I ACTUALLY caught him yawning with 5.5 seconds left in the game! Maybe he was just that confident that we were still going to win...

By the way, did anyone else notice the infatuation with getting the ball inside today? I'm not too sure why, but it seemed like we were not looking for 3's too often until late. LSU was eating us alive, and all I can say is that #12 is an excellent basketball player. If he puts on another 10-20 pounds, he will be an absolutely dominant player. I was very impressed with LSU's athletism today.

What a game! Thad has these guys really after it this year. I can't wait for conference play. The Big-Ten looks like its going to be pretty competitive this year, and to be honest I like our chances...
Big Ten
Team Conf. W-L Tot. W-L
Illinois 0-0 14-0
Ohio St. 0-0 10-0
Michigan 0-0 10-1
Wisconsin 0-0 10-1
Michigan St. 0-0 12-2
Minnesota 0-0 9-2
Iowa 0-0 11-3
Indiana 0-0 7-2
Penn St. 0-0 8-3
Northwestern 0-0 6-4
Purdue 0-0 6-5

I think this team could be in for a nice little run in the tourney come March, like sweet 16 or maybe even better. It's good to be a Buckeye!

Tyrus Thomas. You'll be hearing from him. Without looking at the box score, I'd wager he had something like 14 points, 7 boards, 4 assists and 6 blocks. Just a guess. I think he was Louisiana's Mr. Basketball, but I may be confusing him with Tasmin Mitchell. Either way, he's a hell of a player.

Just got home from Cbus - what a frickin game boys and girls. Was my first game in Value City. We were talked into trading our tickets (332) for seats down in front of the band (114). They sucked, because we were entirely too low and couldnt see shit, but other than that, what a beautiful facility.

I think that may have been the best come back I have ever seen. 9 points in like a minute. WOW. That team will not quit. Most teams would have folded up tent and been out of there. Proud of these guys. My god did that place go nuts when Sylvester hit the game winner. I almost jumped a full row down and landed on 2 people. Didnt think I had that in me

He was very athletic, but his game is very raw still. He should've been called for about 3 or 4 over the back fouls that he got away with. Combine that with the 3 fouls he was actually called for and you've got a player that needs to learn to contain his athleticism a little better. And he needs to improve his shooting. 5-14 isn't that great for a forward.
