Game Thread #2 tOSU at #3 Oregon, Sat. Oct. 12, 7:30 pm ET, NBC

What was your opinion of the crowd noise or did you have your hearing aides out?
Can’t hear you.

It was very loud, and impressive because although it was a new stadium record, it was only a little over 60K people. I’ve mentioned before that I saw the decibel meter show 127 in the final minute. I’m not sure if it got a little higher than that, cause I made sure I saw the snaps. (EDIT: it hit 129). Before the game they said they were hoping to break their stadium record of 127.something. It was the biggest win they’ve ever had in that stadium (they’ve never defeated an AP #1 team), and the game was close throughout with 7 lead changes, so the excitement level was high during the entire game.

It‘s tough to compare it to other stadiums for noise because where your seat is makes a difference. Comparing it to other West Coast stadiums, it was louder than Husky Stadium (U-Dub) in 2007 and louder than the Coliseum for USC‘s comfortable win in 2008. I haven’t been to the Rose Bowl for a regular season game, but for mixed bowl crowds it‘s not exceptionally loud, I think due to the shape of the bowl, and perhaps the laid-back LA vibe.

I was at Camp Randall when they returned the opening kickoff and went on to defeat the #1 Tressel/Pryor team in 2010, and remember it as a hornet’s nest. I’ve been to the Erector Set in State College, but the WhiteOut was calmed down by a 20-point Buckeye victory. Nebraska was loud for their biggest comeback in history when Braxton got hurt in 2011, and not so much when I was there the next time for a huge Buckeye win. I’ve been to Iowa and Sparty a couple of times each and they’re not as loud as Wiscy or unHappy Valley. Illinois, Minny, Purdue, Indiana, and NW’ern don’t get real loud. I still have to visit Rutgers and Maryland.

I was at DKR in Austin in 2006 and the end zone section wasn’t memorable for crowd noise. I think they were stunned that their defending champions could get beat at home. I’ve also been to the Giant Toilet Bowl Up North and it doesn’t come close to equaling the loudest stadiums.

I‘ve also been to postseason venues with domes in Indy, The Superdome, JerryWorld, and Glendale (AZ), and they didn’t get as loud as the noisiest B1G stadiums, probably due to the split crowds.

The Shoe was certainly raucous for The Game in 2006, the only time that’s been a #1 vs #2 matchup. My seat for that one was near the top of the stadium, so I probably didn’t experience as much noise as other spots would have.

But Autzen belongs in the top tier for crowd noise, with the Shoe, the Erector Set, and Camp Randall. I haven’t been to LSU, Bama, The Swamp, Neyland (Tenn), Kyle Field (aTm), Georgia, Fayetteville, or Jordan-Hare (Auburn) to compare those.

Edit - I was also at the VA Tech game in 2015, memorable for the ‘Enter Sandman’ pre-game ritual, and of course for Braxton Miller’s fantastic spin move at full speed in the open field. For noise I would rate them in the second tier like Iowa and Nebraska.

Autzen was loud as hell, modern stadium designs with Phil Knight money regardless of capacity will do that. I've been to AA and it really wasn't that loud for having so much capacity (sunk in a valley, old stadium). Went to a Wisconsin game a long time back against Ohio State, place was insane loud.

But I'll definitely attest to Ohio Stadium being the loudest I've heard in '06 in The Game. I was still a teenager and my eardrums were about to bleed. With respect to this game, I think it did have an impact to be perfectly honest. All the more reason to believe we will beat them on a neutral site if given the chance.

BB, when watching the field, saw a whole bunch of scarlet sprinkled across the stands. Looked like they spread 'em out, rather than putting a clump together (in the end zones usually). Probably to keep away the OH-IO cheers that Buckeye fans are loving to do. When I built football stadiums (or remodeled), put a walk-way on top, to help facilitate exits if fire, etc. Didn't think of looking there.....Well, except for the loss, you saw a pretty good game. No less than Josh Pate noted that tOSU seemed 'confused' or 'in shock' or somesuch with the noise 60,000 rabid fans made. Heck, it was hard to hear the announcer call out the plays with that racket. I would have probably taken out my hearing aids, preventing more damage. Thanks.

NCAA just changed the rule so the time spent before the penalty goes back on the clock. Thanks for nothin. Let's go back to Eugene and replay those last 10 seconds now.
It is definitely frustrating but Lanning used the rules as written. Now they have changed and that's good, but does no good for the last game of course. I do genuinely hope there is a rematch at some point this year to get revenge on bullshit tactics like that though (among many other reasons).

Oh so true. Frustrating how some coaches look for ways to skirt around the rules. It's OK for tax purposes, but not for football (that's my opinion and I am sticking to it). Maybe tOSU might try some novel approaches like DL stunts, twists, or other ways to get into the backfield. We made millionaires of the QB and WRs. Not certain that tOSU could just blow these players off the line(s), nor can we count on the NCAA closing the loopholes in their rules. PS, agree that the OPI was a bad call, but as many, believe that the game shouldn't have turned on one play. Kept waiting for tOSU to explode, but never happened. The 'fire everyone' attitude seems to have simmered down, and we're in a rationalizing period (maybe it's a good thing we lost this early). Am anxious to see how the response is to Nebraska (Raiola). A Nebraska guy in golf group keeps honking about Nebraska (he wears more Nebraska gear than I do tOSU stuff), but goes silent when I walk by. I'll wait to see if he offers a bet on the game :biggrin2: Go Bucks!

So I think if Ohio State wins out, they SHOULD be in the Big Ten Championship game.
Undefeated teams are Indiana, Oregon, and Penn State. If Ohio State wins out, that would give losses to Indiana and Penn State. And if the tie-breakers work the way they should, Ohio State would have the tie-breaker over Indiana and Penn State.
1-loss teams Nebraska, Iowa, and *ichigan will work out, too, since Iowa already has a loss to Ohio State, and Nebraska and *ichigan are on Ohio State's schedule, giving them 2 losses.
That just leaves Illinois and Wisconsin to worry about. Illinois has to play at Oregon. That should knock them down to 2 losses.
Wisconsin also has to play Oregon and they also play Penn State. Both are home games for Wisconsin, but I would imagine that we can count on Wisconsin losing one of those.
The only thing that might get goofy is some 3-way tie where we need to worry about coaches' wives' bra size, or something.

Well now I want to know all the B1G coaches wives' bra sizes, thanks a lot.

But yeah we're in the B1G championship most likely if we win out. And I hope it's against Oregon, I want another crack at it. Whenever I lost narrowly to an opponent (regardless of sport), I wanted that shot at soon as possible. I'm sure the team feels the same way.

More than I cared to know, thanks but no thanks. But zbuck's posts, now that's another story, and hope it's a big one. Yeah, hope we get another crack at Oregon. And possibly once more in playoffs. That loss narrowed the window of opportunity, but it's nowhere near closed - yet. Keep the head down, and grind some more. Please, team, don't read the newspapers/internet stories about how good you are. You gotta prove it one game at a time, until there's no games left to win. Go Bucks!

I had a look at Oregon's remaining schedule today and yikes, I thought OSU's schedule was soft (not accounting for Indiana's surprising rise to prominence). They will definitely be in the B1G championship game. Pretty sure yall have known that for a while; I'm just expressing B1G's football scheduling philosophy for this season is utterly bewildering to me. Make sure you get that exciting PSU vs. Minny contest on the schedule, B1G. Wouldn't want to make Oregon travel to crappy valley in mid-November.
