Game Thread #2 tOSU at #3 Oregon, Sat. Oct. 12, 7:30 pm ET, NBC

Home vs Nebraska
@Ped State
Home vs Indiana
Home vs dUMb

Not easy. @Ped may be a must-win
I think they are all must-win games. But yes, Penn State is a must-win. Lose it, and we need either Oregon or Penn State to lose 3 games to pass them. But beat Penn State (and win all the others), and we don't need nothin'. We're in the driver's seat.
Oregon has (A) Purdue, (H) Illinois, (A) *ichigan, (H) Maryland, (A) Wisconsin, (H) Washington. I don't see 3 losses there.
Penn State has (A) Wisconsin, (H) Ohio State, (H) Washington, (A) Purdue, (A) Minnesota, (H) Maryland. Outside of Ohio State, I don't see 3 losses there.
But beat Penn State (and win all the others), and we have the tie-breaker over Penn State.
Ohio State would give Nebraska their 2nd loss, so they're out of the tie-breaker.
Purdue better be an easy win.
Northwestern better be an easy win.
Ohio State would give Indiana their 1st loss, at least, so that would put Ohio State over Indiana in a tie-breaker.
And *ichigan better be an easy win.
So Penn State is a must-win.

Lose to PSU? Not gonna happen, James Franklin will make sure of that.
I hope you're right. I believe you're right. But we've seen the ball take funny bounces.

I remember seeing it in a playbook. If we were in a situation where the offense had two plays to win, and 5 yards or half the distance to the goal was not back breaking, sub a couple extra guys in, and then win the game on the last play.
It’s the Buddy Ryan Polish Goalline defense.

Oh they were very clearly playing for a FG at the buzzer Saturday night. I don't think it's a confidence issue in Fielding per se.

I really do think the corner kicks were intentional, especially the first one. Kinda like golf - you try to hit a lay up and miss it. Well dammit, I'm trying again and miss it. Since it's a beautiful sunny day and no one is behind you, well, try it again sort of thing.

In the Marshall game, it was clear Marshall wasn't going to win, so working on something like that makes sense at a certain level. not sure I try it 3 times myself but it is what it is.....
I think they were probably playing for a FG too, but just not doing obvious things required to get there. That's my real beef at the end of the game.

On the kickoffs, completely agree that's what was happening and I like the analogy. But if that's true, then Day needed to own up to some of that. My main point that wasn't stated very clearly is that I think fans might look at kickoffs and think field goals as the same thing when they're not. To use your analogy, just because you can't drive the ball well doesn't mean you can't have solid iron play

But the vast majority of that last drive at the end was pretty horrendous even considering all the mitigating factors already brought up in the thread. I don't think we can explain away Day in the waning moments of big games (not saying you did, but some seem to be). Not writing him off and I freaking love the guy, but winners find a way to win more of these games. If you want to step into CEO mode, you gotta be the CEO and close, or know even if other factors are involved the buck stops with you. He has openly admitted that but he's got a big hump to get over this season for road to meet the rubber. The hump is a little smaller with the new playoff system, but it's still a big hump at Ohio State.

We'll see how the rest of the season plays out, just feel like I'm a broken record in saying that is all. Go Bucks and let's regroup on this bye week.

It absolutely kills me that they didn't try to get the kicker from Miami U, and instead the kid went to Bama.

That is one of my major complaints about Day. Special teams is not focused on at all. They should be scouring the country every year for the best kicker out there. Instead, they are ok with kickers who are iffy at 30 yards.

Fielding is 19-23 in his career. May not have 50+ range but he’s a solid kicker.

I actually thought the last drive was exactly what you need to see under pressure. They had mistakes, but went down the field with good calls and execution. I like the pass play that resulted in the bad OPI call. They were being aggressive and trying to get a chip shot FG with a chance to break one for a TD. Clock management after was a failure, but having their momentum broken and trying to gain 20 yards instead of 10 kills those drives 75% of the time.
