So I was talking to a friend about how Washington State should have had 1 more play at the end of the 1998 Rose Bowl against Michigan, and I was looking for it on YouTube.

1. Does anyone know where I might find a clip showing that the ball is spiked with time still on the clock?

(This really isn't important - I'm just doing nothing at work.)

2. The reason I'm bothering posting anything is that I found this video:

YouTube - Is Lloyd Carr the Best Coach in College Football?

Trev Alberts, you never cease to amaze me.

Well, Zurp, I'm only about a year late here, but I found some vid for you.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZMqS83n_vw]YouTube - 1998 Rose Bowl: Michigan-21 WSU-16 (PART 3)[/ame]

A couple of things that I had forgotten
1 - With 16 seconds left, Wazzu was at their own 7 or 8.
2 - The big pass that moved Wazzu in to Michigan territory... I have no idea why the official didn't throw his flag. He even went so far as to pull it out of his pocket... I didn't have sound on, and I don't recall, but it looks like Offensive pass interference to me.
3 - The next play, moving the ball to the 26 - the Clock clearly shows :03. The play is dead and the chains and teams are moving in to place. Next thing you know, the clock reads :02 I have no idea where this :01 second went. I do recall wondering the same thing on January 1, 1998, but had forgotten until now.

There is no question the ball has been spiked with the clock showing :01.

I think both questions could be answered by the clock shown on the ABC broadcast not being the official clock. Now I'm not sure if that's the case, but if it's not, there's no reason for it to have moved from 3 to 2 after it was stopped, with the chains still being moved.

But if the game were against Sparty in East Lansing, or against Texas in Big 12 country, there's a much better chance that there would have been 1 second left after the ball was spiked. :wink2:

Meh - that Nebraska team that buried UT in the Orange Bowl was the better than Michigan anyway. Had the BCS been in place, I feel pretty confident Nebraska beats them in the final.

That was the team that needed the kicked ball (by a guy laying on his back) into the end zone, where a diving freshmen WR caught the tying TD as time ran out against Mizzou. Nebraska then won the game in OT - they weren't impressive that day.

Thanks. I guess I have to spread some reputation before I can click that link for your post.

Anyway, I saw this game on Big Ten Network a couple of weeks ago, and I watched specifically so I could see that there was one second left. They also had the Michigan-Michigan State game from 2000 or 2001, where there was a second left on the clock that Michigan State used to win the game a few days later. Maybe next they'll show the 2005 Michigan-Penn State game where they gave Michigan a second to win the game?

1. I find that many times pants = parties. Booyeah!
2. What is almost as mysterious as the spike taking 2 seconds... is the time holds at :03 for a few seconds, then in the middle of setting the chains, it drops to :02. WSU got screwed.
3. Their chances at a last second 27 yard TD throw was still pretty bad.
4. The 1997 Rose Bowl kills this one in awesomeness.
5. Joe Pa is old.
6. Screw Michigan.
