Ohio State hands Wisconsin first Big Ten loss

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Jamar Butler and Je'Kel Foster took turns making critical shots down the stretch to lead No. 19 Ohio State to a 77-67 victory over Wisconsin (No. 13 ESPN/USA Today, No. 19 AP) on Wednesday night.

The loss ended Wisconsin's seven-game Big Ten winning streak and dealt a defeat to the last unbeaten Big Ten team.

The Buckeyes (13-2, 3-2) had a balanced attack, with Terence Dials scoring 15 points and Ron Lewis, Butler and Matt Sylvester each added 14.

Kammron Taylor and Alando Tucker each scored 21 points for the Badgers (14-3, 4-1), with Tucker shooting 9-of-22 from the field.

With the Buckeyes on top 44-43 and 14 minutes remaining, the Buckeyes ran off eight straight points. Butler hit two free throws, seldom-used sub Ivan Harris hit a 3 from the left corner and Butler made a 3 early in the possession to push the lead to 52-43.

Ohio State, which beat a ranked team for the first time in three tries this season, never trailed again.

The Badgers pulled to 65-61 with just under six minutes left on Brian Butch's 15-foot jumper, but then Foster came out of his slump. He hit the second of two free throws. After a miss by Tucker, he came out of an inbounds play to hit a 3-pointer from the right side. After two more Wisconsin misses, Ohio State went inside to Dials and he hit a baseline turnaround over Jason Chappell for a 71-61 lead with 3:33 left.

Neither team shot the ball well the rest of the way, trading missed free throws and errant 3-pointers.

Four free throws by Taylor cut the lead to 72-65 heading into the final minute with Lewis hitting three foul shots and Foster and Butler each adding one to keep the Buckeyes in control.

Butch added 11 points for Wisconsin, which had beaten Ohio State in its last three trips to Value City Arena. Butch twisted his left ankle on a defensive rebound with 6:34 left in the first half and was helped to the locker room, but came back to play most of the second half.

Wisconsin had its worst shooting game of the season, hitting 38 percent (25-of-66). The Buckeyes, meanwhile, came out of a shooting slump by making 54 percent.

The teams were tied at 31 at halftime after three ties and 11 lead changes.

Wisconsin was without two reserves. Freshman forward Marcus Landry, who had played in every game and averaged 6.4 points and 3.1 rebounds, was declared ineligible for the game. No reason was given for the ineligibility. In addition, backup center Greg Stiemsma was on what was called a "leave of absence for personal medical reasons." Neither player made the trip to Columbus. A Wisconsin spokesman would not elaborate on the reasons for their absence.

Minnesota: ? Who beat them ?

Since when do you have to be a student to get rowdy and make some noise? :tongue2: Don't let all of the old bastards off that easily...I'm glad to hear Brent calling the fans out.

Really, the crowd isn't so bad this year. I remember a game maybe 10-11 years ago in St. John's, during a season when OU was strong (Gary Trent era) and OSU wasn't so hot, that you couldn't tell who the home team was. OSU fans were sitting on their hands, and the arena was about 30-40% OU fans (and sounded more like 80%). During the post game Buckeye radio show, the hosts were livid, and laid into the fans...deservedly so. That still stands in my mind as the worst ever home fan performance that I've witnessed.

On the flip side, SJA was a serious basketball environment during the Jimmy Jackson era. One of the student sections at the time was West End Court, which is where my tickets were (fourth row from the floor)...it was utterly insane. I can't tell you the amount of trash we talked to opposing players. I remember everyone getting on the case of Demetrius Calip, who was a PG for scUM. The kid would smile and point at us every time he made a shot, and we would abuse the hell of out him after a miss whenever he touched the ball. That went on back and forth all game (OSU won). The noise level for the Indiana game was almost enough to cause permanent hearing damage. lol

Anyway, it will continue to get better, especially as Matta builds on a winning tradition here.

Crowd issues aside, this was a huge win tonight. This team is improving every week, and it's nice to see that a pair of close losses to top teams hasn't hurt their confidence. If anything, it helped them. There's not a team in the conference that should expect to come into Columbus and escape with a win...MSU was very fortunate.

im beginning to ponder how far this team could make it in the tourney this year. the teams ranked above us really dont seem out of question and im most definitely including duke into that mix after indiana should have beat them and the throw up a miracle and beat va tech as time expires. we looked pretty good tonight but still a lot of season left. iowa should be interesting. we seem to be the team that can play with anybody but isnt good enough to falter for any one game so..........next up.

Bro, realize this. Other than losing two games to state rivals who Iowa never should have lost to, they have lost At Texas and At Wisconsin. These are not easy teams. Iowa is no slouch and for the record, all losses were away.

scUM's losses: Home vs #14 UCLA and away vs. Indiana and Illinois. Toss in all three losses by less than seven points and you have three ballgames.

These are legitimately tough games.

What I liked:
- Butler's defense. He was making some wonderful stops.
- Syl's shooting. He was using his head a lot more today.
- Dials staying out of foul trouble
- Lewis making free throws when they count
- Finally beating Bo Ryan after 5 consecutive losses

What I didn't like:
- Free throws at the end. We were shooting ourselves in the foot
- Ivan Harris making some silly fouls.
- Giving Tucker six offensive boards.
- Fouling on a three pointer...
- Poor Foster is totally slumpping...

Do not know if anyone posted or noticed but that Taylor from Wisconsin looked like Chris Rock
I don't know if they did it this year, but last year they put a picture of him next to one of Chris Rock on national tv and I about shit my pants.

The student section was chanting "Chris Rock" a few times during the game.
