'19 OH SF Ben Roderick (Ohio Verbal)

I have heard he is very interested in going to osu with, or without a scholarship offer.
I might be wrong but if he wants to play basketball I do not think that he can come to Ohio State and be a member of the team because it would count against our basketball scholarship number. I forget how exactly that works but I know it could not be done.

i also might be wrong here, but i think roderick would be good to go as long as he receives not even an academic scholarship. i think you can dress 15 players for a game, which would be the limit when traveling. i mean, unc commonly has 5+ walk-ons. kansas, too. but roderick would more or less be bound not to receive any scholarship money. programs would otherwise sign uber-talented "walk-ons" before they'd miraculously receive academic aid. or they'd be a two-sport athlete with a scholarship on the track team.

going to take a wild guess here and say that ben's family is financially secure. you're not going to find many payday loan locations in the powell area.

You've got to be really rich and/or really dedicated to go to OSU and pay to play there over going for free someplace else. I would be shocked if this actually happened.

trying to think back to Rickey Dudley in reverse and my mind is blank
Roderick would not be able to do training table or anything that the rest of the team receives
if the family is financially secure and the kid really wants to come to Ohio State I am fine with that and maybe he can prove me wrong

in-state tuition, room, board, books, and fees would be about $25k. that's not too difficult for many families northwest of columbus.

i do agree about the dedication, though. i'm sure he'd be a preferred walk-on.

Would Roderick really pay 100k just to play at OSU over many smaller programs? I would not count on it.
i definitely agree that he'll likely take a scholarship at another school over a walk-on spot at osu, but i'm sure the expectation would be $25k or $50k at osu. i can't see a walk-on with roderick's talent staying more than two seasons without the program's commitment that necessarily accompanies a scholarship.

my guess is that if diallo commits to pitt, then the staff immediately offers and roderick immediately accepts.

i do like what i've seen of roderick in the state tournament. i do think he'd be a good fit at osu despite not having the blue chip athleticism that we desperately need at the small forward position. it's just too bad that he's not a 2020 player. the sticking point is that we don't need roderick or a player like him for 2019. i'm sure the staff has expressed that reservation to him. i mean, if for whatever reason we didn't have andre, jallow, or ahrens for 2019, then roderick would be a no-brainer.

if roderick would consider being a walk-on, would he consider being a redshirt?

if they want diallo and roderick and have no transfers than they could take the walk-on route or send Roderick to prep school. It is more about the evaluation of Roderick as prospect rather than if they can fit him. If the staff wants him then we can make it work.

my guess is that at least one major program soon offers. if so, then i don't think the prep school route would be a consideration for him.

i still think there is the issue of fit, especially since there is a slim chance of him playing meaningful minutes next season with andre, jallow, ahrens, and even liddell ahead of him. on top that, if the staff takes diallo as well as roderick (as a walk-on), then at some point roderick will almost certainly become a scholarship player. we'd then have 4 in the 2018 class, 5 in 2019, and nothing for 2020. that imbalance creates issues. at least with a redshirt, there is some semblance of roster balance.

anyway, with all of that being stated, my first choice is to bank the scholarships for 2020 and instead nab a grad transfer post player. otherwise, it's redshirt diallo.
