Ohio State 104, Penn State 69

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Ron Lewis scored 26 points and J.J. Sullinger added 18 -- combining to hit all but one of their 19 shots from the field -- to lead No. 18 Ohio State to a 104-69 victory over Penn State on Thursday night in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

The Buckeyes (11-0), off to their best start in 15 years, shot 63 percent from the field, including 68 percent in the opening half while building a 58-29 lead.

Lewis came off the bench to go 10-of-11 from the field, including 5-of-6 from 3-point range. Sullinger didn't miss any of his eight shots, making both of his 3-point tries.

The Buckeyes led by as much as 84-39 with 12 minutes left before substituting freely.

Jamelle Cornley, a prep star in Columbus who was a high school teammate of Lewis', led Penn State (8-4) with 20 points. Geary Claxton added 17 points for the Nittany Lions, who had won four in a row since losing 91-54 to Pittsburgh on Dec. 10.

It was Penn State's 33rd consecutive Big Ten road loss, dating to a March 1, 2001, win at Iowa. Ohio State's shooting percentage was the highest by a conference opponent since the Nittany Lions joined the Big Ten in 1992-93. They have lost their last 12 games to a ranked opponent since upsetting No. 5 North Carolina 82-74 in the second round of the 2001 NCAA tournament.

The game was all but over after Ohio State hit 23 of 34 shots from the field in the opening half to go up by 29 points.

After Je'Kel Foster, who had nine points and five assists, missed a 3-pointer at the 15:41 mark, the Buckeyes hit their next nine shots over a span of more than 7½ minutes. They made 14 of their first 16 shots before Foster missed another 3 with 8:02 left, although Matt Sylvester scored with the rebound for a 34-19 lead.

At one point, the Buckeyes scored on 13 consecutive possessions. Even though the Nittany Lions were shooting close to 50 percent, controlling the boards and losing few turnovers, they were falling farther behind.

Ohio State finished with nine turnovers and hit half of its 26 3-point attempts.
Jamar Butler and Sylvester Mayes each had nine assists for the Buckeyes.

This is a great way to start off Big Ten play. They have a huge test coming up on Saturday at Indiana, and it will be interesting to see how they play a tough opponent on the road. What a great win for the Buckeyes tonight, and may the streak continue.

LOVED seeing the younger guys play so much today. Sylvester Mayes, in particular, impressed me the most tonight. Didn't do so much on the stat sheet, but guarded their PG like a CHAMP (started 2 NICE steals in the 1st half in limited action), had some good/lucky passes, and had a couple "how did he do that?" moments handling the ball in traffic. Even spelled Butler early on in the game, which I hoped I'd see more of.

Twiggy had a couple more Sportscenter thumper dunks during warm-ups. The kid can really put it down, and his warm-ups proved that he does INDEED have 3-point range in him, if need be. Speaking of warm-ups, these guys WERE NOT missing during shoot-a-rounds. I knew we were gonna light them up EVEN before the tip, but I was not prepared that the other team would come in with one (and only one) gameplan: turn the ball over at will... voluntarily. I don't think there is one starter on their team that would start for us. Big props to Cornley though! He could be a real player for them in the future. He was one of only 2 guys that they had that stayed right there with us.

Lewis and JJ go without saying. Indiana better have a good D, because these two are all warmed-up, and Foster and Dials are well-rested. I hope we prepare for taking the ball down the court during a press, because I have a feeling they're gonna use one.

Sly put in his best game of the year in consecutive games. No mistakes tonight! And got on the offensive glass too! Impressive.

Ivan's showing improvement. I only wish he got in more with the 1st teamers, because he was showing a LOT of effort out there when he was with them (he subbed for JJ). Even got on the offensive glass with Dials!! I was shocked.

Bell should be playing more often- I'd suggest a shift a game. He provides a spark to this team when he's in, and I guarantee that the other team will NEVER game plan for him until he receives meaningful minutes. My dad has nicknamed him "Showtime", due to his quick passing abilities and his trigger-happy shooting ability (thanks to low minutes).

Found out during a media timeout that the Buckeyes now have an official "dance team". They were actually MUCH better than what I expected them to be when they stepped on the court. They could dance! And each one of them was stacked, too.

Well, that's gonna be my last game for a while (until Michigan in late Feb), so this'll be my last post-game update until then. Way to play tonight, fellas! Beat the Loosiers!
