Robert Phinisee, the 6-foot-0 point guard from McCutcheon, was our unofficial MVP. He scored 19 of his 20 points in the first half to build a double digit lead at the break that IE was never in real danger of giving up.

Ranked now as the No. 61 overall prospect in his class by Scout, Phinisee already holds offers from several Big Ten programs along with Butler and Xavier. He told Peegs.com he's been in regular contact with new Hoosier coach Archie Miller.

Scouting notes: Phinisee got the better of Eric Hunter is the first ever meeting of the state's two top 100 ranked point guards. Robert hit three long jumpers early on, showing off his improved 3-point stroke. Better yet, he showed more creativity with his finishing at the rim off drives. More adept at changing speeds with his dribble to help create seams or space for scoring opportunities.

Still very much Mr. Efficiency with the ball and about as pure of a point guard as you'll find in college, Phinisee along with Romeo Langford of New Albany will be one of the first two big recruiting tests for the new Indiana staff.

Among the first calls? Well, Phinisee didn't see it that way, he was already scheduled to come to Columbus and he didn't know what was going on for a week, but whatever. I'm glad we're in on him, his game is one that anyone can appreciate.

Did you even read the article?

“I’m pretty sure I was one of the first kids they contacted when they were moving over,” Phinisee told The Dispatch. “I feel like (recruiting me) is a really high priority like they did at Butler, too. They said they need a point guard in that 2018 class with the depth chart and everything. (The class of) 2018 is going to be (an important) class for them, they said.”

I was going off this earlier quote from June 15 and the fact that his offer wasn't announced until after another 7 guys:

Even Ohio State, Phinisee’s newest interested team, is currently going through a coaching change.

“I was supposed to visit Ohio State soon, but with that whole coaching change thing going on, nobody has reached out to me yet, so I really don’t know about that,” Phinisee joked.

Maybe he was just joking; it doesn't matter. I like the offer and the interest here.

With Beverly gone, Phinisee now makes more sense than ever. I would love if they could somehow steal this kid out of Indiana. Better than waiting on Cohill to trim his list to 7 in the middle of December.
