I find it more interesting that MSNBC felt that this was newsworthy enough to not only report it but to have an interview with them. Having babies isn't news unless it's some kind of medical oddity. Having lots of babies isn't an oddity, they just hump like bunnies.

Or at least she does

Just a couple of selfish, irresponsible religious freaks.

"We are just so grateful to God for another gift from him," said Jim Bob Duggar, a former state representative.

Um, no dipshit. 350,000 babies are born every day. Having one isn't unusual and they aren't gifts from God. If you haven't figured out where they come from yet you're as stupid as your wife is ugly.

I agree, I think it's very selfish to have that many kids. I've seen these people on TV- that guy strikes me as an egotistical "I'm the man of the house, and you'll be barefoot & pregnant" kind of guy, who gets off on creating his own little clan of freaks.

What kind of life do you have as one of 17 kids?

Funny you'd ask that question... I am the youngest of 17.. same Mom... same Dad... Italian Catholics who weren't allowed to use birth control...

And I'll tell ya.. it's rough... it's a very aggressive environment... but you don't know any different.. you just survive

My maternal grandfather was the 3rd of 17. While his dad (my great-grandfather) was an abusive jerk that treated my great-grandmother like a piece of property, all 17 of their children turned out to be very normal, contributing members to society. The family never went on welfare or looked to others for help, nor did it produce any "losers". Many of the boys served our country in WWII and Korea and then returned home to be farmers, factory workers, engineers, or teachers. The girls included teachers and nurses, though most ended up being stay-at-home moms who raised their own families.

The ignorance shown on this board by those who make blind assumptions and slam the family simply because they are different from the so-called "norm" is incredible, and really sad. (I'm not talking to those making jokes, only those criticizing this family and making assumptions about them.)

I probably shouldn't have referred to the children as "freaks"- I was trying to make more of a statement about the parents (father, in particular). You mentioned that your great-grandfather treated his wife like a piece of property, and that's what I see in this guy- at least, in what I've seen and read anyway.

A different generation and different circumstances. Your grandfather was born during the 1920's I assume and probably lived on a farm? Larger families were more of a necessity and the norm back then. The sad fact is that one or more children would probably die before making it to their teens. And his parents needed as much help as they could get on the farm. Birth control was also in short supply (or not even available) back then. But today it is selfish, egotistical and narrow-minded to bring that many children into an already overcrowded and overburdened world.
