The specific story that started this thread seems to be a family of means... a 7000 sq ft home and the quality of the clothes are tip offs... so they are not the norm... from large families I knew...
but.. being the voice of experience.... you don't take the family to church or school... they walk.. regardless of the distance... 3.4 miles to kindergarten.. you don't know any different... you walk with the older siblings... you walk to church... if you're going to play sports, it's your responsibility to get you wherever you need to be.. here's a bike that's been handed down 4 times...
and taking the family to dinner... haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.. that's a good one... you don't... you eat at home... you use bread crumbs to extend ground chuck to make meatloaf and meat balls... this doesn't mean that one of the older ones doesn't take one or a few of you to an occasional restaurant every so often... My Mom had only been out to eat less than 6 times in her 86 years...
private HS... it's your own tab... most of them have janitor jobs you can get... I did... and hitchhiked home every day.. after walking 2 miles to get to the highway entrance ramp... what you'd do today.. not a clue
college... again, just like scooter said... you get a farking job and pay for it... funny but not so funny, I couldn't get college aid because my mother wouldn't fill out the papers.. she felt it was a govt plot to see if she had money somewhere so they could take it...
Yes, we could have staffed our own McDs but who could afford one.. we could however field two entire baseball teams... and we were all good ball players...
Taking everyone to the movie or the zoo... that's too funny... going to a swim club or a vacation... more giggles... you learn very early, if it costs money you don't ask... you work.. in the home and outside... it's all you know...
And if you ever want a monster dose of reality... win the MVP for the town all-star game.. bring home the trophy and put it on the mantle... only to find it in your room an hour later... to be told... "The Lord doesn't care about baseball trophies" ... religion and faith... that's what drives this folks...
All you can do if you're in this size clan -- you survive... No one went to jail... so we did alright... would I ever want to do it by choice... NEVER
