Really like this kid. With that kind of shooting ability, Payton can help extend and spread-out a defense. Love that hook-shot he's got, too.
He's the type of skilled big man you would see on Bo Ryan's teams. Would be nice to beat that grinch at his own game with Payton.
Q & A with Payton Dastrup
The Buckeyes’ latest commitment, 6-foot-10, 230-pound Payton Dastrup of Mesa, Ariz., had more to say than I was able to get in the paper today. So here’s a partial transcript of our interview about half an hour after he announced, somewhat surprisingly, his commitment to Ohio State.
BB: Why Ohio State? Almost all the recruiting analysts had you pegged for Brigham Young?
PD: When I was on campus (for his official visit Oct.18-20), it just felt like it was the place for me. The facilities, the coaching staff, the guys (on the team), the atmosphere on campus made it my favorite of all the schools (he also considered BYU, Florida and Virginia).
It was a (football) game day that weekend, and just the feel, the energy, the buzz in the air all around campus, really interested me.
BB: Assistant coach Jeff Boals came out to Arizona to visit you last week, and you said that was when you kind of made up your mind that Ohio State was it. Why?
PD: When I was on my visit, (the coaches) kept reiterating, ‘When you get here,’ or ‘When you’re here.’ They were envisioning me being there already, and it made me envision myself there. (Boals did the same last week).
BB: How do you envision yourself in the system?
PD: They talked about me being like a stretch four who can post up when I need to and also play with my back to the basket. They also said they want to take advantage of my perimeter shooting and use me in pick-and-roll and pick-and-pop situations.
BB: Last I read, you were planning to go on a two-year mission for your church but it wasn’t a sure thing. Where are you on that decision?
PD: I’m committed to doing the mission. I’m going right out of high school in June and coming back in 2016.

I assume that this is just a verbal commitment and that if his mind doesn't change he'll sign in 2016 or is there some NCAA exception for Mormon missions that lets us actually lock him up but not have him count against our schollie limit until 2016?
@EvanDanielsFOX: BREAKING: Four-star big man Payton Dastrup has decommitted from Ohio State and will sign with BYU today.
