It had better be the near future for Larry Brown. He's not going to last into the distant future as a head coach due to his age.

Top-25 prospect Jordan Mickey closing in on decision

Most high-major recruits keep things relatively close to the vest when it comes to a decision timetable. Jordan Mickey certainly isn't one of them.

"The end of the month," he said Thursday night when asked if he was making his choice soon.

Mickey, a 6-foot-7 forward from Prime Prep (Tex.), is ranked No. 25 overall in the class of 2013. He fell just outside the five-star rating cutoff, but has the potential to be one of the better combo forwards in the class.

Over the past two weeks, Mickey has hosted Ohio State, LSU and Oklahoma State on in-home visits. He has also previously taken official visits to Ohio State, LSU, SMU and will trip to Stillwater this weekend for a visit to Oklahoma State.

"I'll get to see the campus and spend some time with coach [Travis] Ford and the players," Mickey said about this weekend.

The most recent visit he took was to SMU, where new head coach Larry Brown and his staff have made tremendous inroads with some of the top prospects in the country, especially around the state of Texas.

Mickey likes what the Mustangs are doing lately.

"[I like] coach Brown" he said. "I like the coaching staff, the players and their facilities."

At Ohio State, Mickey would be a perfect replacement for DeShaun Thomas, who is expected to leave for the NBA if he has another impressive campaign. While he's not the natural scorer that Thomas is, Mickey's athleticism and inside-outside ability would be an asset.

This year's Final Four appearance didn't hurt, either.

"I liked the facilities, coach [Thad] Matta and the ability to come in and play in a winning program," he said.

Jordan Mickey on Brink of Announcing

Jordan Mickey is on the brink of announcing his college decision.

?Our goal is to have it done by the end of the week,? his father, James Wright, told SNY.tv Wednesday, adding that an announcement could come ?possibly [Thursday] or hopefully before the weekend.?

The 6-foot-9 forward out of Arlington (Texas) Grace Prep is down to SMU, LSU, Oklahoma State and Ohio State, and James said it was a very tough decision.

?When you narrow it down and you have to say no to the coaches, it?s really hard,? he said. ?We?re still deliberating.?

SMU head coach Larry Brown was in the home Tuesday night for a home visit.

?SMU has definitely got a chance,? James said. ?They are making a hard push.?

He added: ?LSU is coming to practice today [Wednesday]. We had Ohio State down last weekend at practice. Oklahoma State came down last week for a practice. We did an official at Oklahoma State this past weekend. We did an official there. It went really great.?

James said they believe that Ohio State and Oklahoma State are capable of winning now, while SMU and LSU are ?rebuilding? but could be in a position to win soon.

?It?s just difficult,? he said. ?You got four great coaches. I would say two programs are trying to win, and two are in the rebuilding process.?

I know going to the same school as your brother(s) doesn't mean anything but Mickey's brother plays football at LSU and he has going to the campus for two years. That might have been something to know before I got my hopes up:(

Jordan will not be playing high school basketball this season. He and three teammates who transferred from Arlington Grace Prep to Prime Prep Academy when their coach took the job there have been ruled ineligible for violating the athletic transfer rules. Prime Academy is a new charter school founded by Deion Sanders that, in its first year, has had difficulty in handling all the required athletic related paperwork and (apparently) following the transfer rules. It is playing an 'exhibition' football schedule for the same reason.

I guess Mickey got what he deserved with the willingness to ditch his old school to go to fledgling Prime Prep. Dumb mistake to put your future college eligibility on the line to just to be one of the sheep that flock to the "in" school. I wouldn't be surprised to see the NCAA eventually allow him to play, because they regularly rule someone ineligible and then find them eligible after appeal, but still I wouldn't have put myself on that limb to cause potential eligibility issues in the first place.
