Tony Trocha's situation is heating up

As summer approaches, one of the more interesting stories is the recruitment of Houston (Texas) St. Thomas Episcopal's Tony Trocha. Currently a four-star prospect in the class of 2013, the 6-foot-10 center has generated a lot of buzz for two reasons: He's registered a series of reportedly tremendous workouts and has a very strong possibility of reclassifying into the class of 2012.

Trocha has the core academics to make the move, requiring just a qualifying SAT score. He took the test at the beginning of May, and his scores are expected back next week. If Trocha attains a qualifying score, look for his recruitment to move quickly -- but not in a typical fashion.

Currently, Trocha remains in his native country of Colombia. He'll have a very limited window to take official visits in the U.S.; he'll have to head back to Colombia for his duties with the national team. But schools haven't been hesitant to reach out. Kentucky, UCLA, Oregon, Providence and Ohio State are among programs that have expressed interest.

Tony Trocha may visit Dana Altman and the Ducks

Tony Trocha, a 6' 11" center from originally from Columbia who has been playing high school ball most recently in Texas, may visit Oregon. UCLA, Kentucky and Providence are all also likely possible places he'd visit. The latter may be his most likely destination as it's that head coach (Ed Cooley) who reportedly helped Trocha begin the process of having Trocha re-classified into the 2012 class. Trocha has flown under the radar obviously but the teams who want to get him to visit says volumes about how his game has grown.

Tony Trocha: International Man of Mystery
By Adam Zagoria on July 11, 2012

PHILADELPHIA ? By far the most intriguing player here at the Reebok Breakout Challenge is 6-foot-10 center Tony Trocha of Houston St. Thomas Episcopal.

A slew of high-major coaches watched Wednesday as Trocha scored 10 points and grabbed 4 rebounds as his team, the Answers, were blown out, 100-61, by a JWALL team that featured the Harrison Twins, who combined for 39 points.

A native of Colombia, Rocha, 18, is a long, athletic big man who gets up and down the floor well and scored all his points in this guard-dominated game on dunks and layups.

I spoke with him earlier in the day and he speaks very limited English, but his guardian, Jamie Ibanez, a fellow Colombian who has known Trocha since he was 11, gave me an exclusive interview after the game.

?He can put it on the floor, take it to the hole, block shots, rebound and all that,? Ibanez said. ?But like you said, it?s difficult if you don?t touch the ball, if you don?t have touches, it?s difficult to really do anything. So all he can do is just run up and down as hard as he can and try to play defense. That?s all he can do.?

Ibanez said it remains unclear whether Trocha will go to college in 2012 or 2013 and they are awaiting SAT results.

?It looks like he might be a ?13,? Ibanez said. ?More than likely ?13 right now.?

Ibanez rattled off a list of scholarship offers that includes Kentucky, Ohio State, Baylor, Texas A&M, Arizona, UCLA, Oregon, Providence and Georgetown, among others.

Coach: Tony Trocha Will Enter College in December
By Adam Zagoria on August 13, 2012

Tony Trocha will be on a college campus in December.

That?s what his mentor, Jamie Ibanez, told SNY.tv Monday afternoon.

?He?s going to college in December, spring semester,? Ibanez said of the Colombian native. ?He?s not going to prep school or anything.?

During the Reebok Breakout Challenge last month, Ibanez rattled off a list of scholarship offers that includes Kentucky, Ohio State, Baylor, Texas A&M, Arizona, UCLA, Oregon, Providence and Georgetown, among others.

Ibanez said no college visits were currently planned for the 6-foot-10 Trocha, a long, athletic forward who recently played in the adidas Nations event in Los Angeles.

?Right now he?s taking intensive English classes and preparing for the SAT,? Ibanez said. ?He?s finished with high school.?
