Brecksville-Broadview Heights' Tommy Tupa picks up where father left off - cleveland.com

Cody Peck / Sun News, August 27, 2010 11:21 p.m.

NORTH ROYALTON, Ohio -- It is safe to say Brecksville's Tommy Tupa will never forget his first varsity football game.

In his first career start Friday night, the sophomore quarterback threw three touchdowns and led the visiting Bees to a 21-17 come-from-behind victory over rival North Royalton.

Down, 17-14, midway through the fourth quarter, Tupa and receiver Tyler Tarnowski connected for an 8-yard score with 5:28 left. The Bees held the Bears on their final possession, forced a turnover on downs and rode out the clock for the win.

"It was an unbelievable experience," Tupa said. "Especially to win against our rival like that."

Brecksville's Tommy Tupa has already given Bees' fans a glimpse of what he can do. Last Friday, the sophomore quarterback led his team to a 21-17 come-from-behind win over rival North Royalton.

It is often said that history has a way of repeating itself.

If there is any truth to that statement, some very good times lie ahead for the Brecksville-Broadview Heights football program.

Last week, Tommy Tupa, the son of former Bees? quarterback/punter and hometown hero Tom Tupa, got his first varsity start for the Bees.

Right on cue, he delivered a memorable come-from-behind victory that already has Bees? fans buzzing. To make it even more nostalgic, his dad, who serves as Brecksville?s offensive coordinator, called the plays that helped secure the win.

Tom, of course, is best known, at least in Brecksville, for leading the Bees to a state championship in 1983. He later played for The Ohio State University and enjoyed a long career in the National Football League.

Tom, who ironically became the Bees? signal-caller in his sophomore season, is excited for the team?s potential, especially with Tommy under center.

With good reason, too. For the past several years, Tom has called the plays for his son?s class, moving up each year as the boys age.

Last season, with a comprehensive offensive system in place, Tommy and his fellow freshman classmates went 9-1. Now, both are hoping that the system translates to the next level.

?We?ve been running that same offense since they were young,? Tom said. ?It?s the same terminology.

?This year we?ve thrown everything in there. Its going to be fun.?

Tommy shares his dad?s enthusiasm, but said there are some differences between playing varsity and freshman football.

?The speed of the game is a lot different,? he said. ?You have to react a lot quicker. The atmosphere is a lot different.?

Still, with his father looking over his shoulder, he feels confident he can adjust.

?It?s a lot of help,? he said, referring to having his dad on the sidelines.

?If I?m struggling, if I?m not making my reads, he?s always there to tell me what?s what out there.?

?I?m usually harder on his than I am on anyone else,? admitted Tom. ?But that?s typical. I?m his dad. You want him to do his best.?

When asked for his expectations going forward, Tommy said he?s focused on one thing.

?I expect us to win every game we go out. I just expect us to win.?

He?s certainly off to a good start.

As of September 24th (according to the Plain Dealer), Tommy is 47-77 for 655 yards, 8 TD's and 4 INT's. Brecksville is 4-1 on the year and has won their first 2 conference games. They face their first major test of the conference slate when they take on Olmsted Falls this Friday. I will be attending the game and perhaps a few more this season.

Tom Tupa Jr. has displayed skills that belie his sophomore standing for the Brecksville-Broadview Heights football team this season. Part of his maturity comes from his father, a former Ohio State and NFL player who is now the Bees' offensive coordinator.

BRECKSVILLE, Ohio -- Brecksville-Broadview Heights has been in football playoff mode for the past three weeks. Tom Tupa Jr. has been in quarterback mode much longer than that.

With no margin for error, it paid off having the sophomore at the helm as he helped guide his club in clutch victories against Division II playoff-bound Avon Lake and playoff challenger Westlake the past two weeks. It got the Bees (7-3) into the eighth and final spot in the Division I, Region 1 computer standings to set up Saturday's first-round playoff game at top-seeded Solon (10-0), ranked second by The Plain Dealer.

The contest poses another challenge, one a seasoned senior would find daunting. But when you are the son of a former Brecksville, Ohio State and 18-year NFL quarterback/punting veteran, much is expected from the signal-calling position.

That's just fine with the Tupas, especially since Tom Jr. is running the plays his father, Tom Sr., is calling as the Bees' offensive coordinator more than 25 years after leading Brecksville to a state title in 1983.

"I always wanted to be quarterback," said Tom Jr., whose 6-3, 190-pound frame is position perfect. "I tried to play other positions but it didn't work out. Dad loves breaking it down. I love quarterback."

In his first varsity season, Tupa Jr. has thrown for 1,489 yards and 14 scores, with seven interceptions. In his first start, he passed for three touchdowns and led Brecksville to a 21-17 come-from-behind Week 1 win at North Royalton, then ranked 18th by The Plain Dealer, going 17-of-26 for 165 yar
