'13 FL WR Levonte "Kermit" Whitfield (Florida State Verbal)

Ran the second fastest 40-yard dash (Laser-timed) at The Opening today with a time of 4.37. He was one of only two (Jeryl Brazil ran a 4.32) to post a sub 4.40 time until Mike Mitchell ran a 4.39.

Honorable mention: WR Levonte Whitfield, Orlando (Fla.) Jones
Whitfield caught almost everything thrown his way and was the most reliable wide receiver for his team throughout the 7-on-7 tournament. He's not big as some others in his position group, but his quickness and separation are elite.
visited OSU in June and was pleasantly surprised
He runs fast. He catches good. He visited tOSU and liked it. His quickness and separation are elite. Hmmm. Not sure what to make of it.

IMO he reminds me of Joey Galloway with his size and hands at this age. I see a lot of resemblance between those two. Not too worried about height if he catches everything thrown his way and has elite speed and agility. Like Fickel said about Debose last year after his kick return TD in the game that should never have happened, "I'm not sure it had anything to do with speed, no one touched him." Hard to tackle him if you can't touch him:biggrin:

[QUOTE="I like the schools, and I'm going to do what I've got to do," Whitfield said. "They're all good programs. I'm looking for playing time and the chemistry with players and coaches." [/QUOTE]

For some reason, when I think of "playing time" for play maker receivers, I think of Meyer continuing to say he has many concerns about his receiver corp.

Kermit Whitfield hints FSU might be pulling away as he prepares for Gridiron Kings
By Chris Hays | Orlando Sentinel,
July 21, 2012

Orlando Jones' WR Levonte Kermit Whitfield has Florida State, Miami and Ohio State as his top 3 schools. (CHRIS HAYS / ORLANDO SENTINEL / Jul 21, 2012)

Everyone knows that Levonte 'Kermit' Whitfield has always held a special place for Miami in his heart. It looks like, however, the 'Canes may need to make some room.

The former UM commitment said Saturday that Florida State is pulling out in front and while he fell short of saying FSU was a new frontrunner, he also did not dismiss the notion.

ESPN 150's Levonte Whitfield talks top 4
July, 27, 2012
By Kipp Adams | ESPN.com

ESPN 150 athlete Levonte Whitfield (Orlando, Fla./Jones) did not plan on competing at the Jimbo Fisher Camp last week, but once the 5-foot-9, 176-pound prospect arrived in Tallahassee, Fla., he could not resist getting on the field with his peers.

"I originally just wanted to make a visit, but I decided to camp anyway," Whitfield said. "It was a great experience being able to showcase my talent out there."

Whitfield has become a hot commodity this summer, picking up offers from Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Ohio State, West Virginia, South Carolina and UCF. A couple programs have emerged for the No. 113 prospect in the nation.

Orlando receiver's burst a lot like Harvin's

The Whitfield File

HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 5-9, 176

POSITION: Wide receiver

SCHOOL:

Orlando Jones

RECRUITING: According to Rivals.com, Whitfield has scholarship offers from Clemson, Florida State, Florida, Miami, Ohio State, West Virginia, South Carolina and Central Florida

ORLANDO -- Levonte Whitfield came up short against Sammy Watkins in the 200-meter dash at the high school state meet last spring.

That was when Whitfield was a sophomore and Watkins a senior.

Now, Jones is a rising senior at Orlando Jones High and talks of Watkins -- who he calls a close friend -- with a sense of knowing.

Whitfield watched as Watkins, a wide receiver from South Fort Myers High, went to Clemson last fall and torched the league for ACC freshman records in receptions (82), receiving yards (1,219) and touchdowns (12).

"I can do what he did ... only 10 times better," Whitfield said with a straight face Saturday.

Whitfield was at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista last weekend to take part in the Gridiron Kings 7-on-7 passing tournament.

He is ranked as the 75th-best player in Florida by recruiting website Rivals.com. But Whitfield said teams have given him high praise when talking about how he may be used at the next level.

"They have me at slot, punt return and kick return," the 5-foot-9, 176-pound Whitfield said. "Most of them say they want to use me the way (the University of Florida) used Percy Harvin."

And Chris Nee, who covers the state of Florida for Rivals.com, offered a Harvin-like assessment of Whitfield.

"Whitfield's greatest strength is his speed," Nee said. "He has an excellent burst and quickly accelerates to his top gear, allowing him to separate from defenders. His future in college is as a slotback, but he can be used on reverses and at times in the backfield to take advantage of his great quickness."

It appeared that Whitfield's skill set was destined for Coral Gables when he committed to the University of Miami in May 2011. But in March, Whitfield re-opened his recruiting. He said the Hurricanes are still on his list, along with Florida State, Florida, West Virginia, Clemson and Ohio State.

The deciding factor, he said, will likely be playing time.

"I want to go in and play right away," he said. "And it has to be a track school. I've got to run track."

Classes always seem to finish with at least one surprise. It wouldn't shock me if Levonte is one of them. It seems we are behind the Florida schools at the moment so it would be a bit of a surprise plus I think this kid is a sleeper. From what I have read he catches most everything thrown his way and has speed to burn. Get him in the right program and he could blow up. If we strike out on Foster and Quick but landed Gibson and Whitfield I would be very happy. Considering Marshall and Jacobs in the mix I would be very pleased with those offensive weapons. I really like how we sit with this class. Stacked with studs at most positions and we are in the hunt for several play makers to round it out.

OSU target Whitfield will make choice soon
August, 6, 2012
By Brad Bournival | ESPN.com

Levonte Whitfield (Orlando, Fla./Jones) is ready to take away all the suspense.

And the decision could come sooner than some anticipated for the 12th-ranked wide receiver in the nation. No. 84 in the ESPN 150, Whitfield hinted the time has come to offer his services up.

?It?ll probably be some time next week, but it could be this week. I?m not sure when,? he said.

The one thing Whitfield is sure of is his final schools, as Clemson, Florida State, Miami, Ohio State and West Virginia are in the mix.

The 5-foot-9, 176-pound Whitfield has an official visit planned at Ohio State for the Nov. 24 Michigan game because he ?can?t wait to see the history being played between those two schools and the rivalry.?

We seem to be "in" on several playmakers. Interestingly this position seems to have less verbal commits than other positions but I may be mistaken. I think it is important to remember than nothing counts until early February when they sign. We are in the hunt for several studs which is promising. We will see who signs in a few months. Just hope for a good season that showcases our new offensive scheme and we will be in good standing to land a few of them.
