Clover Hill's Joel Caleb leads the list of the Richmond region's top college recruits on the 2012 A-List.
Joel Caleb doesn't remember exactly which school offered him first. It may have been Virginia, or maybe Virginia Tech, all the way back in his sophomore year.
By the time he became a senior, he had collected more than 30 scholarship offers. And on Wednesday, national signing day, he'll choose from three finalists: Virginia Tech, Ohio State or West Virginia.
Today, the quarterback from Clover Hill receives the honor of the top spot on The A-List, The Times-Dispatch's ranking of the best 12 recruits in the Metro area. The list premiered in 2011 with Curtis Grant, now an Ohio State linebacker, chosen as the top recruit.
The man atop the Class of 2012 was no less coveted by college football programs. Caleb said Saturday that all three schools are still equal in his mind. He wants a place where he fits into the roster and a place where he can win. Caleb expects to play wide receiver in college.
"I like them all," he said. "I'm blessed to have the opportunity to be a part of something like this and make the decision I have to make."
Caleb was a unanimous pick for the No. 1 slot by the voters, consisting of college coaches from the ACC and SEC.
"He's a great athlete. An elite athlete," one coach said. "He has size, speed ? all those things. I think he's clearly the No. 1."
Another coach added, "He has great explosion and acceleration. He can run away from people."
