Strengths:
An absolutely incredible shot blocker with uncanny defensive instincts. Noel has good size, length, and quick bounce to go along with precise timing and incredible mobility and agility. He is like a one-man zone with his ability to protect the basket inside the paint but is also a threat to fly out to the perimeter and erase mistakes when the situations warrants. Offensively, he has some rapidly emerging tools. He gets a ton of dunks inside the paint, both from guard's penetration and the offensive glass, because he can catch and bounce into the dunk so quickly. He can make a jump hook over either shoulder, is a terrific passer from the low post, and has a quick spin move when facing up.
Weaknesses:
Still lean, Noel needs to continue to fill out his frame in a way in which will keep his mobility intact but allow him to play through contact with more consistently. His offensive game also needs to continue to progress as he can make jump hooks with both feet planted but can rush the shot at times as well. He needs to shoot the ball better from the elbow and short corner and also become a more consistent three-point shooter.
Bottom Line:
He may already be in the best shot-blocker in the country with absolutely uncanny physical gifts and defensive instincts. With a rapidly expanding offensive game, and solid work ethic and good court demeanor, the sky is absolutely the limit.

SLAM catches up with The Tilton School?s Nerlens Noel.
by Norman Waterman
In New England, they know all about defense on the basketball court. This is the home of Bill Russell, the greatest defensive force ever seen on a basketball floor, and more recently Kevin Garnett, who has carved out a niche as a defensive specialist in an era of offensive play. There may be a new guy for New Englanders to talk about though.
Nerlens Noel, the Everett, Massachusetts native who plays his high school ball at The Tilton School in New Hampshire has become a defensive force and gained national attention in Orlando this summer when he became a one man wrecking crew and blocked 4-shots in 90-seconds to preserve the National Championship win for the 16 & under BABC squad (Boston Amateur Basketball Club). Nerlens, who stands 6-foot 10, is the #3 rated sophomore in the country in almost every poll. SLAM caught up with him to talk about the national title and his high school season so far.
SLAM: So how did it feel to win a National Championship this summer for BABC?
Nerlens Noel: Oh man, it felt great. We really played hard all summer and we are all so close that it was great to pull that out as a team.

Nerlens Noel is nation's best defender

1. Noel best shot blocker since Oden?
The best defensive player in the country isn't a senior. It is junior Nerlens Noel (Boston/ Tilton).
"He makes everything easy all the time because you know you have a dominant shot-blocker back there," BABC junior point guard Jaylen Brantley (Springfield, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson) said.
The stat sheet said Noel had 12 points and eight boards versus All-Iowa but only three blocks. The fact of the matter is Noel dominated play in the first half where Iowa scored just 12 points. All-Iowa Attacks big three of Marcus Paige, Mike Gesell and Adam Woodbury shot 8-27 from the field. Nerlens was in the neighborhood.
I've heard a lot of people criticize his offense and that's true, he has work to do but he's not a bad offensive player, he's just a superstar on defense. He has the work ethic and the offense will come. Pre-summer, Noel listed UConn, Kansas, Georgetown, Kentucky and Florida. Florida coach Billy Donovan was at his first game and Kentucky coach John Calipari and Kansas coach Bill Self popped in during the contest. You can bet North Carolina coach Roy Williams, who also caught his opener, is interested.
Noel isn't the prospect Greg Oden was at the same age, but it's been that long since high school basketball has seen a natural shot-blocker of that caliber. Anthony Davis was excellent last year but Noel is threatening to join an elite club of rejectors.

Noel the center of attention at Peach Jam
Massachusetts big man swats BABC to EYBL championship game with dominating effort against Oakland Soldiers.
By: Jason Hickman | MaxPreps.com
NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. ? From the outset of Friday morning's EYBL semifinal between the Boston Amateur Basketball Club (BABC) and Oakland Soldiers, Nerlens Noel controlled the action.
At times it seemed almost unfair.
The 6-foot-10, 210-pound Everett, Mass., native hurried, disrupted, discouraged or flat-out erased countless shot attempts by the Soldiers en route to 11 blocks and more importantly, a surprisingly-easy 74-60 victory for BABC that wasn't as close as the final score indicated.

Nerlens Noel
Noel added 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead BABC to Friday night's EYBL/Peach Jam championship game against Memphis YOMCA. The contest will be televised live on ESPNU at 7 p.m. EDT.
"I try to anchor the defense for my team, get everybody contributing and let the offense come," Noel said.
That's been a successful formula for Noel all week. Rated No. 3 in MaxPreps.com's Class of 2013 Top 100, he is averaging 11.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and 7.1 blocked shots per game in the EYBL Finals at the Nike Peach Jam. While his scoring numbers aren't eye-popping, he has the ability to wow on the offensive end with baseline drives (usually finished with a dunk), alley-oops (dunk) and put-backs (again, dunk).
His offensive arsenal may be limited at this point, but his college choices won't be. While he is nowhere near a decision, coaches from powerhouse programs like Connecticut, Duke, Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio State and Syracuse have made their presence felt at his games this week at the Riverview Park Activities Center.
