DETROIT - Orchard Lake St. Mary's almost won another football state championship. Yet, the Eaglets came up short, 35-27, at the hands of East Grand Rapids in the Division 3 state championship game late Saturday night.
St. Mary's does have four state titles in its trophy case, but the last three trips to the championship game have ended with a loss to the Pioneers.
For the Eaglets, the trend is getting old.
"I got one more year, and we're gonna use this as motivation going into next year so we can come out and be better," St. Mary's junior linebacker James Ross said. "I'm getting back in the weight room this week and we're going to start looking ahead to next year right now. The only positive thing we can take from this is more motivation to get better next year and we have to use that."
Ross, a special mention for the All-State team who will likely draw interest from Division I colleges over the summer and into next season, will be a key factor for the Eaglets defense if they are able to make another run at a state title.
