'12 MI LB James Ross (Michigan Signee)

I usually say package deals never work out but Michigan has made them work lately...look at the 2009 class:

Thomas Gordon, William Campbell, Teric Jones - Cass Tech
Denard Robinson, Adrian Witty - Deerfield Beach
Taylor Lewan, Craig Roh - Chaparral
Fitzgerald Toussaint, Isaiah Bell - Liberty
Vincent Smith, Brandin Hawthorne - Pahokee

That's turning it into a science. The Cass Tech kids aren't surprising considering Michigan has taken at least one kid from there almost every year for the last 5 years.

Regardless, it's very early but I will be surprised if James Ross ends up at UM.

Would you consider those package deals or just two guys attending the same school who got offers from the same school?

I don't know for sure that any of those guys you mentioned above were considering themselves a package other than Robinson and Witty. Witty was a two star CB. I remember it being said that the only offers they both had in common were Michigan, Kansas State and one of the Florida directional schools. Admissions didn't admit Witty. He was the first casualty of the Admissions Dept. He never even made it to campus. Some of the guys you mentioned were coming to Michigan regardless of where their teammates went.

Stone and Richardson (that's actually the name of my friend's father's law firm) both attend Cass. Ross attends OLSM. I've never heard of a three player package especially when it involves two high schools.

I haven't followed Ross' recruitment other than what I heard mentioned on the radio. I don't know where he is leaning. I know Penn St will be a factor (because of the history with good collegiate linebackers) because last year's QB will be a freshman at PSU in the Fall.

I fully expect Michigan to have a new coach next season so I really don't know what will happen with Michigan's recruiting over the next two seasons.

I imagine only the UM staff really knows...it just seemed a little odd that half the class was made up of multiple kids from the same school.

I actually think he could possibly be an early verbal for us.

Catholic League: St. Mary's James Ross catches on quickly

Orchard Lake -- The first two games of the 2009 season are a blur to James Ross of Orchard Lake St. Mary's. Those were the first two games in which he started at linebacker and, quite frankly, he was nervous. The previous season he played with the West Side Cubs in the Police Athletic League and there wasn't the pressure on him then as there was playing for one of the top programs in the state.

"I grew a little bit since then," Ross said. "I have a little more confidence. I've been studying film and ready to go."

Actually, Ross was ready midway through last season. Even though he was a sophomore, coaches like Peter Stuursma of East Grand Rapids watched film of Ross in preparation for the Division 3 final and was thoroughly impressed. Stuursma later said "that No. 6" was one of the best players his team faced all season.

It's no wonder. Ross had 16 tackles in his team's 24-21 loss to East Grand Rapids. That was six more than any other player on either side.

"I didn't realize how much talent we had last year until the end," he said. "This year we have a lot of new, young players. Once they gain confidence we'll be as good as last year."

Ross (6-foot-1, 217) ran the 40-yard dash in 4.7 seconds at camp but said he can take a half-second off of that. He'll play some tight end this season but college recruits like him on the defensive side. Though just a junior he's received scholarship offers from Cincinnati, Michigan and Michigan State.

Michigan Football Recruiting: Mailbag?

Roy via email: Do you think they will get the LB from Orchard Lake Saint Mary's, James Ross, in the class of 2012 & Royce Jenkins-Stone from Cass Tech ?

Royce is definitely a Michigan lean right now, and if he had an offer I reckon he might be tempted to commit on the spot. The Wolverines are heavy favorites to land him. He and James Ross are part of a trio of players from the state who have played together since they were kids, the other guy is Cass Tech's CB, Terry Richardson. They have often talked about all going to the same school, and if that happens, Michigan is the most likely destination.

Royce will commit to Michigan unless something goes wrong, and Richardson has to like the Wolverines given all his former teammates that are already on the roster. James Ross, who is probably the highest rated of the three, will be a challenge. Alabama, OSU, Notre Dame are all after him, but fortunately Michigan has already offered, which must count for something! Ross is a frequent visitor for UM games too, which is great to see. The decision of the other two could play heavily into his recruitment, so its too early to guess with Ross. However Royce is a big lean.
