Powers Catholic junior Danny O'Brien receives football scholarship offer from University of Tennessee
Bill Khan | The Flint Journal, July 31, 2010

FLINT, Michigan ? Danny O'Brien comes from a family of basketball players, but could tell early on that his college future lied on the football field.

"I've always been a bigger kid," the 6-foot-3, 278-pound Flint Powers Catholic junior-to-be said. "In basketball, I was always getting fouls called on me. That kind of veered me away from basketball. I always loved to hit and stuff like that."

O'Brien has also made unofficial visits to Michigan, Ohio State, Iowa and Vanderbilt.

"I've always loved Ohio State," O'Brien said. "I was a Michigan fan when I was really young. Me and Pat had a little rivalry. He'd go for Michigan and I went to Ohio State. We'd always talk trash to each other during games. Pat and I could never like the same teams."

Flint Powers lineman loves to hit, and is on U-M's radar

Last summer's camp and combine circuit proved to be a coming-out party for a number of in-state football prospects, but few made a bigger splash than Flint Powers Catholic defensive lineman Danny O'Brien.

The class of 2012 standout impressed onlookers at the Sound Mind Sound Body Academy at Wayne State in June, before going on to star in a number of team camps in subsequent weeks.

One such performance was turned in at the University of Michigan.

"I performed to my potential," O'Brien said. "Rich Rodriguez pulled me aside and he just talked to me and said he wanted to see me down at campus this fall for all the games." The outpouring of attention was predictable after O'Brien's dominant showing.

He bested nearly every offensive lineman he faced, the lone exception being Traverse City West standout (and Michigan commitment), Jake Fisher.

Against Fisher, O'Brien managed to distinguish himself by challenging the future Wolverine more than any of his other opponents.

"Dan is very quick off the ball, he plays with a lot of intensity, and he has the agility to get around blockers," said Scout.com Midwest Regional Manager Allen Trieu. "He's about 6-2 and 280 right now, so he's not a big run stopping gap-plugger. I think you'd like to see him get to 300-lbs and get a little stronger in the process. "

O'Brien compares himself as a player to Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen.

"That's because of his intensity and his just going crazy," O'Brien said. "I love to hit. There ain't nothing like it. Any sport I play, I always play with intensity. I always go nuts. I think that is the way to do it. You just throw your body out there. That's the way to play football."

A three-year starter, Hankins is getting some college interest, but not at the level of O?Brien. O?Brien received an offer last weekend from Michigan, to go with one tendered over the summer by Tennessee.

?O?Brien is a good player,? Davison coach Jake Emmendorfer said. ?I think Hankins is a good player, too. It all comes down to colleges have to fit their needs on their teams. There?s a good fit for him out there; hopefully, he finds it.?

O?Brien, a two-way lineman, was one of of the players who had fits all night trying to keep Hankins out of the backfield.

?He?s the real deal,? O?Brien said. ?I think he?s a great player. I had to block him sometimes, but they looped a lot. He?s real strong. I have a lot of respect for him.?

O?Brien said he grew up as an Ohio State fan, primarily to needle his brother, Patrick, who rooted for Michigan. The Wolverines have become more of a viable option for O?Brien because of the strong start to their season after two sub-par seasons.

?Everybody was coming into this season worrying about Rich Rodriguez getting fired if they didn?t do good,? O?Brien said. ?He really stepped it up. Their team shows a lot of intensity on their defense. I like (defensive tackle) Mike Martin a lot; he?s one of my role models.?

Michigan DT takes in ND game - ESPN

Defensive tackle Dan O'Brien (Flint, Mich./Powers Catholic) was in South Bend, Ind., over the weekend. O'Brien and his mother attended the Western Michigan at Notre Dame game on Saturday.

"I liked Notre Dame a lot," O'Brien said. "It impressed me a lot. My mom loved it."

O'Brien attended the Bowling Green-Michigan game earlier this season and received a scholarship from the Wolverines afterwards.

Here with Flint (Mich.) Powers Catholic defensive tackle Danny O'Brien has offers from Michigan and Tennessee offers already. He is planning trips out to Iowa and Wisconsin in the next few weeks.

With Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez being fired, O'Brien's interest in them has declined significantly.

"I didn't think he was going to get fired," O'Brien said. "Depending on who the coach is will impact my decision. That's an unstable program and I want to go to a stable, on the rise program."

He said he has "big time" interest in Tennessee and plans to get down there soon for an unofficial visit.

USC, Oregon, Alabama are really showing a lot of interest and sending handwritten letters.

As a junior O'Brien had 89 tackles, nine sacks and 21 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
