Rico Webb, a senior football player at
DeMatha with a college scholarship to play for Alabama State, died early Sunday morning at Howard County General Hospital in Columbia. He was 17.
An autopsy was performed Sunday, but results are not yet known, according to the state?s Office of the Chief Medical Examiners.
Listed at 6 feet 7 and 365 pounds, Webb started on the offensive line this past season for the Stags and occasionally played on the defensive line.
?Rico was a fantastic kid,? DeMatha football coach Elijah Brooks said. ?Everyone on the team, the coaches and players, we loved him. He was a big kid. It was a tough morning for everybody.?
According to a DeMatha spokesman, Webb was not feeling well Saturday and that night was taken to the hospital by his father, where he later passed away.
Webb is survived by his parents, Kim and Richard Webb.
Funeral arrangements are not yet known.
