Ferrell leads red-hot Park Tudor's run to Class 2A semistate
Sophomore guard leads Park Tudor to 9 wins in past 10, regional title
By Kyle Neddenriep
Posted: March 15, 2010
It's been a big March so far for Park Tudor sophomore Yogi Ferrell.
First, the 5-9 point guard led his team to the Class 2A Sectional 43 championship last week, the program's first in three years. Also last week, Ferrell picked up a scholarship offer from Indiana coach Tom Crean, adding to a list that already includes Butler, Illinois and Ohio State. (Notre Dame and Purdue also are showing heavy interest.)
But maybe the capper -- to this point, anyway -- was Park Tudor's regional championship Saturday at Connersville. The Panthers (14-10) defeated South Ripley 45-30 in the first game, then upset No. 6 Winchester 50-41 in the title game as Ferrell scored a game-high 18 points.
"It's been really fun," Ferrell said of his team's tournament push. "I just keep thinking that I want to keep this thing alive for the seniors."
Seen and heard
Park Tudor point guard Yogi Ferrell is playing "up" by a year this spring and summer with the 17-and-under Indiana Elite. Though his team was upset in the quarterfinals of the Adidas May Classic, he said playing with prospects such as Washington's Cody Zeller and Muncie Central's Jeremiah Davis has been worthwhile.
"I can focus more on passing the ball," the 5-11 Ferrell said. "That's a little different mentality than my high school team, where I have to do more scoring."
Ferrell, whose current scholarship offer list includes Butler, Illinois, Indiana, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Virginia and Washington, said his offseason goal is to improve his ballhandling and his ability to catch and shoot. He works with his high school coach, Ed Schilling, two hours a day at Champions Academy, a basketball training facility.

Adidas May Classic: Q&A with Yogi Ferrell
I caught up with Yogi Ferrell over the weekend and spoke with him about all of the interest he has been getting. Ferrell looked good in the games I saw him play on Saturday at the point. He was completely in control. The class of 2012 point guard from Park Tudor was playing up one level with the 17 & Under team that also had Cody Zeller, Jeremiah Davis, Kenny Kaminski and others. And he was more than holding his own. Here's the Q&A from that interview.
(I know you've been getting a lot of interest the last few months in particular. Bring us up to date with exactly what schools have offered you to this point?)
"Recruiting has gone really well to this point. I have offers from IU, Illinois, Butler, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Washington and Virginia. So that's going well. I've been offered by a lot of schools so it's making it interesting.''
2012 Intro: Kevin ?Yogi? Ferrell
by Alex Bozich in Recruiting | May 31st, 2010
The Essentials: 5-10, 165-lb guard for Park Tudor and Indiana Elite
The Schools: Butler, Illinois, Indiana, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Virginia and Washington have offered scholarships. Michigan and Xavier have expressed interest.
The Numbers: 23.4 ppg, 4.6 apg for Park Tudor, which fell to Wheeler, 41-38, in the Class 2A state championship.
The Quote: ?There are other schools who are, and have been, really recruiting Yogi very exclusively. I?m not real sure that IU wants Yogi, just right now. I don?t know.? ? Ferrell?s dad, Kevin, to Zach Osterman of Inside the Hall.
The Ranking: The Hoop Scoop ranks Ferrell the 86th best prospect in the 2012 class.
The Scout Says: ?Few elite point guards have emerged from the class of 2012, but with continued development ?Yogi? is knocking on the door. Bigger than advertised at just a shade under 6 feet tall, he?s got super quickness, a tight handle and outstanding floor vision. A fine vertical athlete who takes the ball right at bigger defenders near the rim, what really sets Ferrell apart is his deadly pull-up jumper (which is true out to 22 feet).? ? Q&A: Kevin ?Yogi? Ferrell
Published by Joe Stapleton on June 9, 2010
I recently got a chance to sit down for a phone interview with 2012 point guard Yogi Ferrell, one of the top guards in the class of 2012. Ferrell plays AAU for Indiana Elite with Marshall Plumlee and Cody Zeller. I watched him in Fort Wayne at the Spiece Run-N-Slam earlier this summer and we have video here and here. Ferrell is being recruited by a number of schools, including Notre Dame, Indiana and Ohio State in addition to Michigan.
Can you describe your game? I?m a point guard, getting up and down the floor, getting guys the ball where they need it and they can produce and one thing I like play D, so I?m very focused on defense. I never let my guy go by me.
Who has offered you? I?ve been offered by IU, Illinois, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Washington, Virginia and Butler.
Do you have any visits planned? I haven?t made any visit plans so far but I know I?ll make some this summer.
Will you be attending any Elite Camps? I was going to go to the IU one this weekend but I?m actually going to be in Oregon. But I?m definitely going to go back down to the Michigan one.
Do you have a timeframe for committing? Probably after my junior year, probably after that summer.
Yogi Ferrell (2012, PG) I saw Yogi play in Indy Elite’s last game of the night, a thriller against the Dallas Mustangs that went until almost 10pm. He didn’t play much in the first half, but when his coach put him in in the second half, he balled. Yogi is simply a complete package. He handles the ball, he shoots, he has great vision, and he’s fearless. He took a little time to gain his footing (keep in mind, he is playing up) but once he found it he was lights out. He had a sensational crossover for a 3-pointer at a crucial moment, and was a big reason Cody Zeller hit his stride later in the game. He got shafted on a few late foul calls, but overall a great performance, and in front of the likes of Tom Crean, Roy Williams, Billy Donovan and John Beilein to boot.
Kevin Ferrell has offers from Indiana, Illinois, Ohio State, Butler, Notre Dame, Purdue, Washington, Virginia, Michigan, and Florida.

Yogi trying 'not to let it get to my head'
Indianapolis top junior guard Yogi Ferrell has been getting a lot of attention from the media and college coaches in recent months.
The 5-foot-11 junior-to-be at Park Tudor School said he's trying not to let all of the attention affect his play on the court or his path to an improved game.
"I don't want it to get to my head," Ferrell said. "So, I just have to keep working. I like going out there and just playing and not worrying about anything else."
Ferrell said he has offers from Indiana, Purdue and Butler with interest also coming from Illinois, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Washington, Virginia and Notre Dame.
"My top five list as of now?," Ferrell said. "I really don't have one. I am going to wait to see if I get more offers (this summer) and then go from there. It's a huge simmer for me."
When asked about his interest level with the Hoosiers, Ferrell said "Coach (Tom) Crean is a great guy and I have been there a lot. It's somewhere my family can get to see me play."
Q: What school is recruiting you the hardest so far?
A: Michigan.
sCum might be talking a lot but it doesn't look like Yogi is listening muchFerrell said he has offers from Indiana, Purdue and Butler with interest also coming from Illinois, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Washington, Virginia and Notre Dame.
Scouts '12 / 2010 Summer Scouting: Yogi Ferrell
2010 Summer Scouting: Yogi Ferrell
By Joey E on August 2, 2010
It?s time to introduce you to a new feature called Summer Scouting. Over the next month or two we?ll be recapping how Indiana players have done this summer. Included will be a scouting report and an overall look at how the player progressed and performed this summer. This will be based off of AAU and summer high school games.
Yogi Ferrell
I watched Ferrell play more than half a dozen times during the AAU and summer league season. I can tell he?s really improved since the end of the high school season, and it?s most evident in his shooting ability. I?ve always thought he was a pretty good shooter, but consistency was an issue. Ferrell himself said he worked hard to improve his shooting, and it looks like the hard work paid off for him. He?s got a great pull up jumper, and will often unexpectedly hit a jumper right over a defender. Size was often a knock on Ferrell last summer (5?8), but since last summer he?s sprouted up to a height of 5?11.
Yogi Ferrell, Park Tudor (IN): This weekend Yogi showed how dominant he can be when his game is firing on all cylinders. He shot the ball well from all over the court, knocking down pull-up jumpers, mid-range shots, and tough floaters in the paint. When the defense creeps up on him he’s able to blow by defenders off the dribble and score at the rim. There wasn’t much he didn’t do this weekend as he scored off the dribble, shot the ball consistently, and pestered opponents on defense. He carried Indiana Elite to victory in one game, scoring four straight baskets and grabbing two steals from his opposition.
More on possible Zeller-Ferrell connection
September 24, 2010
Written by Kyle Neddenriep
I?ve heard talk recently that the recruitment of Washington (Ind.) 6-10 senior Cody Zeller could have an impact on where 5-11 Park Tudor junior Yogi Ferrell ultimately lands. Though Ferrell said he isn?t close to making a decision ? ?probably after next summer?, he said ? he did admit he?s watching Zeller?s decision closely.
Among Ferrell?s many offers are Butler and Indiana, which are two of Zeller?s final three (North Carolina the other). Ferrell is taking an unofficial visit to Indiana on Saturday and was on the Butler campus last week for an open gym.
On possibly with Zeller (a teammate with Indiana Elite in the spring and summer) in college, Ferrell said: ?It?s been a thought, because I?d love to play with Cody. I?m interested to see what he does.?
Only two schools, obviously, fit the profile: Butler and Indiana. And though it?s not a done deal by any means that Ferrell will follow Zeller, it lends further credence to the belief that landing the Washington big man could have a ripple effect beyond getting a commitment from one of the top 20 seniors in the country.
Ferrell, Lyles will visit Bloomington this weekend
by Alex Bozich in Recruiting | September 22nd, 2010
Two of the top high-major prospects in the state will be on campus this weekend as both 2012 Park Tudor point guard Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell and 2014 Indianapolis Tech forward Trey Lyles will take unofficial visits to Indiana.
Ferrell (pictured) has taken several trips to Bloomington in recent months and will do so again this weekend, according to Kyle Neddenriep of The Indianapolis Star.
The 6-10, 210-pound Lyles, a versatile forward who picked up an offer from Indiana in early August, will visit on Sunday, according to his father, Tom.
The Tech freshman is considered one of the top 25 prospects nationally by The Hoop Scoop.
