Scout.com: 2012 Standout DE Dante Fowler Has Early Top 5

Lakewood junior defensive end Dante Fowler, who has oral offers from the likes of Florida, FSU, USF, Tennessee and Ohio State, said the first time colleges showed interest, he was a freshman.

?I (like having offers) right now so I can spend some time looking at the schools,? Fowler said. ?But they?re offering eighth-graders and stuff at the same time, so I guess it?s a good thing and a bad thing."

Right now he knows his strengths and weaknesses and what to work on after talking to colleges.

?It?s a blessing to get all these offers,? Fowler said. ?The coaches tell me they?re going to keep an eye on me and that inspires me to go to school and do my work in class and lift weights. I would miss that attention.?

Maybe somethin like take the first two that pull the trigger? Nothing wrong with getting in early on top-flight prospects.

It seems odd that we would extend an offer to another LEO type DE in such a small class, with verbal offers already out to McMullen and Pittman it makes you wonder what the staff is thinking on this one.

Fowler has top 5 DE potential, and the scary part is he's going to be a JR and is still only 15 since he's young for his class.

It's unlikely he leaves the state of FL, but when a recruit of this caliber at a premium position shows an early interest in an OOS school you have to jump on it and be aggressive early or you'll be left in the dust before you know it. McMullen probably projects different than Fowler as well as far as where they line up, but I wouldn't get too worried or caught up in that just yet. The staff has shown a desire to avoid OOS recruits that decide late (hence the change in focus this year) and part of that is achieved by getting in on kids earlier and more aggressively, which we are seeing with Fowler. Hope that answers it!

I assumed it had something to do with pure talent overcoming any other considerations, and my original post probably came off as a little more negative than I meant it to, but thanks for the explanation

it seems extremely likely that the 2012 class is going to fill up even quicker than this years class, so maybe the idea is to put early pressure on some elite out of state guys because the in-state guys seem very likely to commit way before next February
