Championship Saturday notebook: Valor Christian OT Alex Kozan receives blue-chip interest

Valor Christian offensive tackle Alex Kozan has become popular these days with college recruiters.

Kozan, a 6-foot-4, 295-pounder who plays left tackle for the Eagles, is scheduled to make official visits to Michigan this week and Auburn the following weekend. Coaches from Colorado visited Valor Christian's practice Monday, and offensive line coaches from Iowa and Michigan made home visits last week.

The Kozan family has ties to Ohio State and he has made an official visit to the school. But as of Saturday morning, Alex had not heard from newly hired Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer.

"It's amazing to grow up watching these teams and then to be recruited by them," Kozan said Saturday after Valor's 66-10 victory over Pine Creek in the Class 4A title game at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

"When those coaches want you to play for them, that's awesome," he added. "I've met a lot of great people out there, a lot of great coaches. At the same time, it's a tough process to narrow down the schools."

Kozan is among the state's highest- ranked players, making Rivals.com's prestigious national top-250 list at No. 239 (all positions).

Auburn offensive line coach Jeff Grimes attended the game Saturday. Grimes coached at Colorado under Dan Hawkins and was instrumental in moving Nate Solder from tight end to offensive tackle. Solder, from Buena Vista, became an All-American and a first-round draft pick of the New England Patriots.

Whose to say OSU wasn't the one who waited too long? What if OSU had offered had back during the summer? How are we so sure he would pick OSU if he were deciding today anyways? Is it really his loss if he accepts an offer to play at LSU...the #1 team in the nation right now?

Objectivity, people...

Not saying it's his loss to go somewhere else or that we wouldn't be losing out. Do I think Bollman waited too long? Yes. I think it's obvious that the kid has OSU in his heart at least to a point because he kept stalling waiting for an offer from OSU. But, I think it's interesting when kids who have a dream school wait to commit when they get offered late. Is it their prerogative? Yes, but this late in the game, you don't know what's going to happen so why wait? Urban sees that our roster is full of guards and is looking for tackles. Kozan most likely will play guard. That will possibly leave him without OSU as a choice. You read a lot into a simple statement of "he may have waited too long."
