The whole "ND uses TE's" argument will start subsiding with recruits too... Under Kelly, only once did a TE have more than 20 catches in a season, which was this past year with Gidugli... His offense is much more WR focused...
ND also landed Elder's Alex Welch last year and he's a Rudolph clone.
I really doubt that ND's attractiveness for TE dissipates under Kelly.
Football is really all about creating mismatches then exploiting them. Kelly is now at a place were he can attract top line guys like Rudolph and Welch who are natural matchup headaches. Options such as these were not available to Kelly at any of the previous stops his career so I think there's a danger of constructing limits based on past capabilities.
Kelly is also smart enough to realize that athletic TEs are offensive wild cards that can cause defenses nightmares.
For instance in a two TE personnel grouping as a defense you really have to stay big (linebackers) lest you give up size and lose at the point of attack. With guys like Rudolph & Welch, Kelly can either align them as inline blockers and play power or split them both out wide and use them in space.
If you stay base he can spread them out wide and force your LBs to cover them in space. Best of luck with that.
If you sub to nickle you're giving up size at the point of attack and he can run at you.
Either way he has the initiative and you've got to react to him.
