In-state wideouts step up
For two years, Saginaw's DeAnthony Arnett had been hailed by most high school observers as the top in-state receiver in the 2011 class. After a season that saw his numbers tethered by a new offense and catching passes from a converted wideout, questions arose about his No. 1 status. Those doubts stoked the competitive fire of what is normally a young man of few words. Sunday he spoke loudly with both his mouth and his game.
"I had to come down here and show that I'm still the best," Arnett boasted. "I had to let everybody know that, (especially) all the doubters out there that was trying to talk about me. I had to come out here with a point to prove, and I proved it."
The performance was made even more impressive after taking into account Arnett's busy athletic schedule.
"Arnett had a basketball game the night before the camp and practice later in the day, but he came anyway simply because he wanted to compete," said Scout.com Midwest regional manager Allen Trieu. "He then went out and justified his high national ranking (Scout.com's No. 8 receiver in the country). He's silky smooth and one of the best double-move guys I've seen. He has great body control, fluidity and ball-tracking skills. He still needs to get stronger, but guys who try to press him have difficulties because he's so quick off the line and tough to get hands on."
He is proving tough for college coaches to get a grasp of as well. New suitors keep lining up, with Oklahoma being the most recent, but he seems content with taking the slow and easy approach.
"I like USC, Notre Dame, Michigan State," said Arnett. "I've been in contact with Michigan lately so that's real good. I got a chance to talk to Coach (Fred) Jackson and Coach (Tony) Dews. I talk to Alabama, Oklahoma and USC. I do not know when I'm going to make a decision. The recruiting process has picked up so much, I don't really know when I'm going to narrow things down."
