Michigan linebacker expects offers soon

Linebacker Lawrence Thomas (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) is one of the top five juniors in the state of Michigan. Not surprisingly, Thomas expects to soon begin receiving written scholarship offers.

"My coach is going to see if any come in his mailbox (Wednesday)," Thomas said.

Thomas has a verbal offer from Michigan State.

"UCLA said they are going to offer," Thomas said. "Alabama, Colorado and Penn State are supposed to offer. I'm interested in Penn State, UCLA, Michigan State, Iowa, Notre Dame and Ohio State."

The 6-4, 235-pounder made 77 tackles and had five sacks during his sophomore season.

Detroit Renaissance's Lawrence Thomas could be top in the state

BY JOSH HELMHOLDT
FREE PRESS SPECIAL WRITER

Several junior prospects throughout Michigan are jockeying this fall to be considered the state's top player in the class of 2011, heading into the off-season. Saginaw wide receiver DeAnthony Arnett, Grand Blanc running back Justice Hayes and Ogemaw Heights offensive lineman Anthony Zettel are having strong junior campaigns, but the front runner may be Detroit Renaissance linebacker Lawrence Thomas.

His high school coach doesn't like RR one bit. He sent a player to play for him at WVU and thought he wasn't treated very well (which quite honestly seemed pretty misguided, as the kid had some legal troubles). He was even quoted as saying that he wouldn't let one of his players play for RR.

So if RR is still in place in a year, it's MSU or out of state. MSU has a fantastic pipeline into Renaissance and Thomas looked like a lock early, but of course when the big schools start calling....

Buckeyes Offer Linebacker | Ohio State Buckeyes College Football Recruiting, OSU Big Ten Football, OSU Basketball - Bucknuts.com

The Buckeyes have offered a scholarship to Detroit (Mich.) Renaissance linebacker Lawrence Thomas. Thomas is one of the top junior linebackers in the Big Ten region and the No. 1 class of 2011 prospect in the state of Michigan.

Thomas started at both middle linebacker and tight end during his sophomore season. He made 77 tackles and had five sacks. In seven games Thomas made 89 tackles including 16 sacks during his junior season. He had a whopping 26 tackles for loss and intercepted two passes.

The 6-foot-4 and 235-pound Thomas has a list of scholarship offers that includes Ohio State, Michigan State, Michigan, Penn State, Alabama, UCLA, Oklahoma, Florida, Wisconsin, Syracuse, Vanderbilt and Colorado.

If the Buckeyes are to land Thomas, their biggest competition may come from Mark Dantonio and Michigan State.

I think we have a real good shot here. He's a DL at the next level. He'll be 270 by the time his college senior year rolls around.

Awesome, this kid is big time and I'm glad to see the offer. Do you think there is any chance of him playing DT? With Hayes and Miller, plus possibly DE/DT Chris Rock, I'm curious to see how it all would play out. Imo you take all 4 though if you can...what a group if you pull it off.

That is not the case. Rich never coached a kid from Ren at WVU as far as I know.

The coach did however publicly say that Rodriguez did two of his former players who went to Michigan wrong, Carson Butler and Andre Criswell, and he said that it hurt his heart and blah blah blah and a bunch of crap.

Rich did inherit the pair of former Ren grads in Carson Butler (TE) and Andre Criswell (FB/DE) from Lloyd Carr however.

Butler was an immensely talented athlete, but he had a two cent head. Butler was pretty much awlays in trouble on and off the field. Lloyd even kicked him off the team at one point only to allow him to earn his way back on the team after some assault charges that were pending against him got dropped.

Rich started Butler at TE at the start of the year, but a bunch of false starts, dropped passes, and an on-field fight in which Carson punched a player from Notre Dame in the face lead to Butler getting suspended and then moved from TE to DE. Butler didn't like the switch so he declared for the NFL. Carson Butler has nobody to blame but himself for his failures at Michigan, and quite frankly I think that Carr did the wrong thing in letting him come back.

Andre Criswell was a program player who was literally offered a scholarship to Michigan on NSD because Carr had an extra spot in the class and he never really did anything of note at Michigan and played sparringly in garbage time in 4 years. Criswell graduated from Michigan with a degree and is getting in the coaching profession and he now works for Rodriguez as a G/A.

I think the coach from Ren really needs to keep his mouth shut and he also needs a reality check, because Butler wronged only himself, and Criswell got himself a degree and Rodriguez has given him a job and has allowed him to potentially pursue a career in coaching and there is no shame in that whatsoever.
