Offensive tackle Arie Kouandjio signed with Alabama last week.Recent Alabama offensive line signee Arie Kouandjio has an interesting background on his own.
Originally born in Cameroon, Kouandjio now hails from the Washington, D.C., area. He was interested in judo and wrestling growing up, and really thought until about age 12 or 13 that soccer could be his ticket.
"Then I just started outgrowing it," Kouandjio said. "... When I was young, (my father) told me that he didn't want to put me in (sports) for a hobby. He told me to find a sport I think I could pursue and be serious with, and I picked football."
Good call.
Now standing 6-foot-5, 335-pounds, Kouandjio is an offensive tackle with the kind of footwork that reflects a background in a sport like soccer. Nick Saban called him "a real tackle type and a real good player. (He) was probably a real key to making us feel like we satisfied our need," on the offensive line.
But there another aspect to adding Arie.

Do we have any chance at this kid?

He seems like an excellent run blocker, with great athleticism, hope we have a shot.

I remember having the feeling last year that he and his brother were pretty much a package deal if the school wanted them both. I'm not sure if that's still the case (or even was) but it sounds like it.

With the offers going out, I think the staff is clearly taking a different approach to the BIGS category...Walker, Farris, Bennett, and Bobek. What do they have in common? They are all huge-OSU leans. Plus Mangiro seems to have legit interest. I think the staff isn't going after the national types this year and who can blame them...get the numbers your after and try to round it out with a Kouandijio or Westerman type. With no offer to either (both are considered top 10 national players), I would say this assumption is safe (and wise).

I wouldn't even be surprised to hear that they have not offered these kinds of guys beucase they truly think they still have a shot at Seantrel Henderson, depending on the USC hearings over the next couple of days. Once they get his "final" decision that I think we can expect to see some offers to national LT kids.
