DaVaris Daniels beats buzzer this time as Vernon Hills upsets Grayslake Central

Vernon Hills guard DaVaris Daniels couldn't help but notice the irony.

On Feb. 16, Grayslake Central guard Jordan Taylor hit a jumper with 0.9 seconds left in regulation. Daniels then drained a 3-pointer, but the would-be game-winner was waved off because it came after the buzzer.

On Wednesday, 15 days later, Taylor made two free throws with 7.9 seconds left in regulation to give the Rams a one-point lead. This time, Daniels got his shot off in time, hitting a floating 12-footer to propel Vernon Hills to a 61-60 victory against Grayslake Central in a Class 3A North Chicago Regional semifinal.

"That was just an unbelievable game," said Daniels, who had 28 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks. "I tried to get as close as I can to the basket. It's unbelievable, the same as last time. This time it was nice to get to celebrate."

As for the Buckeyes, most contact has been of the digital variety. "I text OSU all the time and I might catch one of their spring practices with Evan. They haven't offered, but it's going pretty good with them."

For those who don't know, Evan is Daniels' teammate Evan Spencer. The two of them have been friends since they were little kids and have talked about playing together in college. "I mean, we hope so. We got a lot of the same offers right now. Hopefully it comes down to that. I mean it's not set in stone yet. We're still just trying to wait it out to see where we each end up."

It's clear that Daniels would welcome the chance to continue to benefit from their on-field chemistry, "I mean, Evan. You can't say nothing else but try to explain what kind of person Evan is. He's almost like any other coach out there. We just push each other to be the best. I mean we just make a good team."

Hopefully, Dorsett and Story pick their southern teams soon, so we don't miss out on offering Daniels.

Daniels is as cool as a Elins side of the pillow.:tongue2: I asked every way I could think of about his interest for any school that may have the inside track: Georgia (dads alma mater), OSU (Evans likely pick), Notre Dame (distance, BKs offense), Purdue (chance to play QB). He wasn't tipping his hand in anyway. He gave thoughtful responses every time as well as both positives & negatives for almost every school.

Regardless, I just don't see the Bucks taking 3 WRs, 3 classes in a row. They replaced Robiskie & Hartline with Carter, Fields, & Jackson 2 years ago. Last year they replaced Small & Thomas with Brown, Louis, & Williams.

Here are my predictions on the offered WRs. If these turn out correct, Daniels getting offered seems unlikely to me.

Shane Wynn - OSU
Evan Spencer - OSU
Phil Dorsett - Florida
Ja'Juan Story - FSU
Brandon Phelps - Virginia

Here's what I perceive to be the next group and their ranking from most likely to be offered to least.

1. DeAnthony Arnett
2. Curt Evans
3. Davaris Daniels
4. Devin Smith
5. A.J. Sebastiano

Some people undervalue the OOS card.. some kids just want to get away and play for a "foreign" program that is well know. It remains to be seen but I would not be shocked to see Dorsett in S&G.

I don't think that means much, a lot of kids admire guys who remind them of themselves and still don't go to that school. It also has a lot to do with Ginn playing in Miami also. Think about the amount of dual threat QBs who really look up to Mike Vick and Vince Young, yet many of them don't go to VA Tech or Texas. I think they look at the players and not so much the school. If I was a small, fast WR, my role models would be Ginn, and guys like Hester and Desean Jackson.

Now that the first prize has been awarded in the recruiting battle for the Vernon Hills football program's two dynamic playmakers with speedy junior Evan Spencer headed to Ohio State, we'll see if classmate DaVaris Daniels soon follows suit.

Daniels (pictured above), a 6-foot-3, 185-pound standout, has told people he won't make a decision until the fall, but a source close to the program said Daniels was leaning toward Notre Dame last month.

However, he added Oklahoma was also one of Daniels' top choices. Purdue, Arkansas, Louisville, Michigan, Miami, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Iowa were in the mix.

Unable to qualify academically for admission to his first choice, Notre Dame, wide receiver DaVaris Daniels of Vernon Hills has decided to enroll at the University of Miami.

Daniels, son of the Washington Redskins' Phillip Daniels, will make his announcement at a press conference at his high school at noon on Tuesday.

The 6-3, 180-pounder had 13 scholarship offers but never seriously considered any schools other than Miami and Notre Dame.

In April, prior to the May evaluation period, Daniels said Notre Dame was his favorite. "Notre Dame has everything I am looking for. I feel I can fit in there. I am excited about what coach (Brian) Kelly has to offer. He has committed to the spread offense," he said.

But Daniels admitted he was "still open to others." And when it became apparent that Notre Dame couldn't get him into school, he opted for Miami.

"They have a brotherhood, a great tradition," Daniels said. "I grew up watching Miami powerhouse teams dominating everyone. My dad has some teammates who went to Miami and they talk about the U, how they still go back to the school, how they still are a part of the program."

Remember last month when Vernon Hills High football star DaVaris Daniels apparently was set to make a verbal commitment to play his college ball at Miami (Fla.), and then suddenly cancelled the press conference to announce that decision?

Was it maybe because Georgia came into play?

Daniels' buddy at Vernon Hills High -- speedy wideout Evan Spencer -- has announced he'll play his college ball at Ohio State, which is where his dad, Thad Spencer (now a running-backs coach with the Chicago Bears) played.

DaVaris's dad, Phillip Daniels, was a star defensive lineman at Georgia in the mid-1990's, and internet reports from followers of Georgia football suggest dad would like son to become a Georgia Bulldog.

The problem apparently has been that Georgia hasn't exactly had DaVaris on its recruiting front-burner.

In one story, Papa Daniels was quoted as saying DaVaris was hurt by playing in the unheralded North Suburban Conference Prairie Division.

"They question the league that he played in," Phillip Daniels was quoted as saying. "That's the only thing that they weren't sure about.

"But he plays a skill position. It's running and catching the ball. My answer was, 'Look what he's done in that league.' And you're talking about a kid who has a 40-inch vertical. He runs 4.4 (in the 40-yard dash). He plays every sport. He even plays defense. I'm not saying that as a dad. I'm saying that as somebody who has been around athletes all my life. Whoever gets him is going to get a special athlete."
