JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Recruiting is picking up for quarterback Kevin Sousa (Lake Nona, Fla./Lake Nona).

The 6-foot-4, 200-pounder said Miami recently issued a verbal offer and he's getting attention from Notre Dame, Oregon, Michigan, Illinois, Kentucky, Florida International, Florida Atlantic and Tulane.

"I am going to be looking at location and size of the school when I pick the program," said Sousa, who intends to seek the advice of his coaches when he goes to pick a school.

Sousa threw for 1,500 yards and rushed for another 989 last season, while maintaining a 3.5 grade point average and has academic goals he will consider as well.

"I am not sure of my major yet, but I am thinking about mechanical engineering," he said.

Sousa continues a busy travel schedule this spring and summer. He plans to make an unofficial visit to Oregon. A trip to Ohio State is also on the schedule, along with several other camps and combines.

Florida Gators snag one of top performers at Jacksonville UA combine - ESPN

The top quarterback in attendance was Kevin Sousa (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona), a physically impressive looking signal caller with good raw tools. He's an under-the-radar prospect, but has a thick and muscular build. A good athlete who can be a dual threat, Sousa displays the tools to be a passer first. He has a strong arm and puts some zip on the ball. He's played predominately out of the shotgun, so he needs to keep working on his footwork and mechanics, but has a solid release and nice upside. His performance Sunday showed he is a kid to keep an eye on.

Kevin Sousa is starting to hear how great he is from every direction. Most people in attendance at this past weekend's Under Armour Combine in Jacksonville had pretty much the same reaction to Sousa's performance.

Among the raves:

"Sousa was a man among boys."
"Big Sousa looked like a stud out there."
"The Sousa kid was incredible ... really stood out. He's got a cannon arm. That kid is big-time."

Just random comments from three different Orlando school representatives who have no vested interest in how Sousa performed. They just know they were amazed at what they saw.

Work In Progress
Kevin Sousa (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona) popped on the radar a few weeks ago and is a kid who grabs your attention with his physical build. He has good size, a thick muscular frame and looks more like a linebacker than a quarterback. In addition to his natural size, Sousa turns heads with his arm strength -- the kid has a cannon. While his raw tools are impressive, he has work to do on his mechanics. It seemed apparent that he realizes he needs to work on his game and as a result he appeared to be over thinking things at times. You can tell he is working to be a better quarterback, but he came across as stiff at times when trying to marry good technique with his raw skills. In drills where he was able to move around and roll out and rely more on his athleticism, he looked more comfortable and natural. At a high school which fielded its first team last season, Sousa is still a work in progress. He claims a written offer from Florida International and interest from other programs. He is a player with upside and someone to watch as he matures at the position.

Locals Jeff Driskel, Kevin Sousa, Sam Richardson show of at Elite 11 Quarterback Camp

...
Guys like Kevin Sousa, another hulk of a quarterback at 6-foot-2, 217 pounds, of Orlando Lake Nona were putting on a show, both short and deep. Sousa, ranked No. 15 in the Central Florida Super60 for 2011, may have even surprised himself a little. He's been working on his accuracy and had not been pleased with his inconsistent ability to zero in on targets.

Not the case on Sunday.

Sousa was right on time in the target drill, one of five stations quarterbacks rotated through as part of the camp, and he even advanced from his group to participate in the camp-ending Accuracy Challenge. He didn't win, but he was pleased with his performance overall.

"It was a great day out here. We all had fun and we all competed against each other," Sousa said. "There are a lot of good quarterbacks out here but I think I'm good enough to hang in there with them.

"We had the accuracy drill and I got eight points off that (tops in his group). It all motivated me more to work on more accuracy and getting the ball there quicker."

Sousa isn't done with the Elite 11 camps. He'll be attending two more at Ohio State and Alabama. Sousa said he didn't really pay much attention to all the other quarterbacks, preferring to remain focused on his task at hand.

Jeff Driskel, Tony Steward shine at Florida NFTC - ESPN

Kevin Sousa (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona) also stood out in what was an impressive group of QBs at the camp. His underneath passes had good zip and the ball really came off his hand with some good RPMs at times. He fit several passes into tight spots and had nice rotation on his intermediate-to-deep throws. Sousa has raw arm strength and his mechanics can be shaky at times, but we like his upside when projecting for the college level.

Under-the-radar prospects shine - Insider - ESPN

You look familiar
Once again Kevin Sousa (Lake Nona, Fla./Lake Nona) shows up to an Elite 11 regional camp and each time he gets better. In fact, this was by far his best outing and he is starting to really iron out some kinks in his delivery and become more smooth and fluid as a passer. Athletically he is ultra impressive, but there were times on Friday when he got his feet, timing and delivery to sync up and for that moment, was the best guy in the camp. He can do some things that are very impressive and with a redshirt year, some program is going to get a nice little gem.
