July, 2009: Cooney's shooting ability is what draws your attention to this rising junior. He has consistently shown himself to be one of the top marksmen in the 2011 Class. He shoots it with ultimate confidence with the ability to get on an impressive roll. His deep range automatically stretches the defense opening up driving lanes for his teammates. Cooney does a great job of working off of the ball; he does a good job of setting up his defender and then utilizing and reading screens; he understands how to use spacing for catch and shoot opportunities. He has a nice shot fake that allows him to lift his defender and get by to the rim or pull-up for a mid-range jumper. He is a tough, rangy athlete that has decent lateral quickness and can guard his position. He is a good off the ball defender and showed a good understanding of help-side positioning.
June, 2009: Cooney has range that extends well beyond the 3-point line and will connect on jumpers with ease from distance. He also can hit 3s in transition on the break, but he needs to continue to improve his shot selection, as he sometimes tends to shoot ill-advised treys. He sometimes shoots the 3 off-balance and turns his shoulders away from the rim when he shoots jumpers, causing him sometimes to miss, though he has a high release and when he gets his feet set, the shot is usually money. He has decent quickness and can get into the lane off the dribble. When he plays the point, he has great size for the position, but he sometimes looks to shoot first when he initiates the offense. He has decent vision and can find open teammates for scoring chances.
April, 2009: Cooney has great size and is a lights out shooter with deep range and a quick trigger. He has a great basketball IQ and terrific shot preparation. He understands how to read the defense and make the right cut or adjustment to get open. He sprints the lane for spot up jumpers in transition stretches the defense in the half court. He spaces to the open area on penetration and sprints off screens in a set plays. Cooney is a better driver and passer than he gets credit for. He can draw multiple defenders and deliver the ball to the open ball and can be his man off the dribble as they attempt to take away is deadly jumper with an out of control closeout. Cooney has good strength and can break open the game with a flurry of three's. One of the top shooters in the 2011 class.
July, 2008: Cooney has good size and strength for a young player. Big time shooter with NBA range. Tremendous confidence in his shot. Great shot preparation and form. He is low and his hands are ready to shoot when he receives the ball. Text book release and follow through. Gets his shot off very quick and every shot looks like it has great chance of going in. Did not take bad shots. Showed patience and as soon as he gets daylight the ball is out of his hands before the defense can recover. Sprints the floor in transition and moves well without the ball in a half court setting. Cuts hard off screens and reads penetration very well. Excellent at getting to the vision of the passer to receive the ball. Underrated passer and driver because his shooting gets all the attention. But he is skilled and strong enough to go by his defender and get into the lane for a lay up or drop off pass to an open teammate. Must continue to add to his game and not depend only on his jumper because as opponents scout his game he will have to learn how to score in other ways. But a treat to watch when he getss it going from behind the arc.
June, 2008: Trevor is a big time shooter. He is very good at catching and shooting and has a decent off the dribble game when he is pressed on the perimeter. He is a better athlete than you think and can go in and flush on an unsuspecting opponent. Trevor has ice water in his veins and can hit big shots in big games. He has range to 22 feet. He is a competitor and a competent defender especially when he feels challenged. Trevor is a top 25 prospect in the 2011 class nationally.
