'10 Switzerland/NV C Enes Kanter (Kentucky Signee)

Calipari, from the article of StarBUCKS:
> There was no money, from what we?re seeing, what the kid is saying and the family, and what Nike is saying,? Calipari told The Sporting News. ?There?s a lot of misinformation out there. You?ve got people talking about it that don?t know, just heard a rumor. <
Yeah, all that misinformation coming from the GM of Fenerbahce, the team Kanter played for - the GM clearly doesn't know what he is talking about and is just spreading rumors (rolls eyes).

After re-reading what Coach Cal was saying earlier this year, I have to laugh. Obviously there WAS money. Now Kentucky is ADMITTING that Kanter was paid $33,000 of extra impermissible benefits, and they're STILL trying to get Kanter eligible. From what I understand, the logic from UK is that he was paid $33,000, and it violated NCAA rules, but he was being paid for educational purposes, therefore he should be allowed to play NCAA basketball. Good luck getting the NCAA to agree that breaking their rules against being paid extra benefits is OK as long as you are only taking the money for educational purposes, even though the money did not fall within their exception for educational expense money.

Enes Kanter ruled permanently ineligible

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Kentucky's pursuit of an NCAA title won't include freshman center Enes Kanter.
The NCAA Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee upheld Friday an earlier NCAA decision that deemed Kanter permanently ineligible for receiving more than $33,000 in impermissible benefits while playing for the Turkish club team Fenerbahce two years ago.
The ruling means Kanter will not be able to play, practice or travel with the team but will be able to receive financial aid should he choose to remain at the school.
"We are obviously disappointed in this decision and find it unfortunate that a group of adults would come to such a decision regarding the future of an 18-year-old young man," coach John Calipari said.
Calipari has maintained from the beginning that Kanter is an amateur in his eyes. He says his job now is to prepare the Kanter for the NBA draft. The 6-foot-11 center is projected as a top-10 draft pick.
"Enes will always be a part of our family and I plan to be by his side in the green room whenever he is drafted," Calipari said.

Yes, no doubt Calipari will take credit for "coaching up" Kanter, even though the kid never played a game for him and would've been a lottery pick regardless of how he spent this season. Kanter will surely join the ranks of Amare Stoudemire and Kendrick Perkins as big men who signed with Calipari that never played for him yet managed to become lottery picks and succeed in the NBA.

I don't understand why the Kentucky fans are so up in arms over this and claiming that the NCAA is in the wrong here. It seems like a cut-and-dry case. Dude accepted $33,000 playing PROFESSIONALLY overseas. He's no longer an amature. Thus, he can not participate as an amature in college hoops.

Am I missing something here?? Sounds like sour grapes and greed to me. Especially with Coach Calipari. Belittling the NCAA like he did in that article isn't going to get him anywhere.

This is pretty consistent w/ how the NCAA has treated overseas players in the past. Kentucky is upset, not for the young man, but for themselves b/c they could have been a national title contender with him.
