"Cody Larson has asked for a release from his National Letter of Intent, but still has great interest in the University of Iowa. Cody would like additional time to familiarize himself with myself and the new coaching staff. As a staff, we look forward to getting to know Cody more in the recruiting process."

The latest chapter in the fast-moving Cody Larson recruiting saga involves serious interest from the University of Florida.

Gators coach Billy Donovan was in Sioux Falls on Friday to meet with the Roosevelt senior and his family, and Larson flew to Gainesville on Monday for an official visit.

He is expected to tour the campus, meet with Donovan again and fly back on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-9 forward requested and was granted a release from Iowa after Todd Lickliter was fired and replaced by former Siena coach Fran McCaffrey. Larson can still re-sign with the Hawkeyes, and he also showed interest in (and received offers from) Indiana, Michigan, Ohio State, New Mexico, Wake Forest and Arizona State. Several of those schools, as well as Kansas, paid visits to Larson in Sioux Falls last week.

But the Big Ten schools - other than Iowa - took a hit because conference transfer rules prevent Larson from receiving a scholarship from another Big Ten team without appealing to the league.

That opened the door for Donovan, a tireless recruiter who guided the Gators to national titles in 2006 and 2007 and also reached the finals in 2000 with a kid from Mitchell named Mike Miller.

Could the South Dakota pipeline be renewed with Larson? Don't bet against it.

I don't understand how the Big Ten transfer rule applies here. I thought you had to actually enroll at a school to transfer from it. Maybe all the coaches from other Big Ten schools recruiting Brust and Larson actually know the rules and they're not wasting their time.

Florida just accepted a verbal from a 6'7" forward in the 2010 class on Sunday, and also got a commitment from Mike Rosario in the past day or two, both of them will take up scholarships for next year, bringing their incoming class to 4. I don't know how many scholarships they have left to offer these recruits - it wouldn't make much sense for them to take Larson now unless Alex Tyus is really leaving the team.

Larson commits to Florida

STU WHITNEY ? [email protected] ? April 21, 2010

A decade after Mike Miller helped the University of Florida reach the NCAA basketball finals in 2000, another high-level South Dakota recruit is joining the Gators.

Roosevelt senior Cody Larson verbally committed to Florida on Tuesday in Gainesville and said he is excited to follow in Miller's footsteps.

"It's still hard to grasp that I'm a Gator," Larson told the Argus Leader on Tuesday night. "I look forward to getting back down here and starting my college career."

The 6-foot-9 forward traveled to the campus Monday with his family and met with Gators coach Billy Donovan and several Florida players. He accepted Donovan's scholarship offer Tuesday and is expected to sign today before flying back to Sioux Falls.

Florida basketball signee Cody Larson faces misdemeanor drug charge
Larson faces June 15 court date for potential plea deal.

GAINESVILLE
At least one of the Florida Gators' basketball signees for the 2010 class comes to Gainesville with some baggage.

Four-star power forward Cody Larson from Sioux Falls, S.D., faces a misdemeanor drug charge stemming from a February incident that got him suspended from the Roosevelt High School basketball team.

Larson's lawyer appeared in court Tuesday, and his legal proceedings have been moved to June. Larson can make a plea deal on June 15 or settle for a trial starting June 22, according to reports.

Larson, 18, is charged with "being in a room knowing drugs are kept or used there" in February, according to the Sioux Falls Argus Leader. Grant Wynia, a teammate at Sioux Falls Roosevelt High, is reportedly charged with ingesting or inhaling Hydrocodone at Larson's house. The charges are in light of the school district's investigation on drug use.

Both players were suspended from the basketball team in February. If convicted, Larson faces up to a year in jail, a $2,000 fine or both.

The incident isn't expected to affect Larson's placement with the Gators.

I thought I read somewhere that that was actually his second "incident involving drugs in some way" he'd gotten in trouble for already. Seems rather lame, but with it not being the first maybe it wasn't worth the risk after all. I read that when Thad was still in the picture; so before he visited UF and pledged there. This didn't seem to bother Thad or Billy D anyway.
