I know erick personally and have played with him for the past couple years and have had the "pleasure" of being his tackling dummy a few times. Pretty much all i can say is he tackles tacklers he never quits extremely strong for his size good speed he can play any position at least at the hs level and he wants to go to OSU he would make a great running back especially once he gets into their program

A lot of us are rooting for Erick and would love to see him in S&G but the ball is in his court. He's got to get the work done to make himself eligible.

The best thing for erick, imo, is to follow suit of what many MANY other talented prospect before him had done: Go to a prep school, get your grade in check, THEN re-open up your recruitment. Don't settle for less, young man. In order to get what you want, you will have to make some sacrifice. Things you want often don't come by EASILY. WORK for it.

NORTH CANTON ?

Erick Howard has options as a college football player. At one time, that wasn?t clear. Howard has been offered by two MAC schools, he verbally committed to one, but not he is wavering.

As the Feb. 3 college football signing day creeps closer, Hoover High School senior Erick Howard has choices.

The two-time Mr. Football winner and Stark County?s all-time leading rusher said Wednesday he has verbally committed to sign with the University of Akron next week, though he could change his mind.

And Howard has another option as well. He could choose not to sign with a college and enroll in a prep school. There, he would play football and try to boost his grade-point average. Howard would not lose a year of college eligibility.

?I will probably decide before the weekend or during the weekend,? Howard said. ?It?s between Akron and Toledo right now.?

Howard would need a 2.2 GPA for a BCS conference school such as Ohio State to offer him a scholarship. He is just shy of a 2.0 GPA necessary to avoid Proposition 48 and play for Mid-American Conference schools.

Most BCS schools don?t offer scholarships to Prop 48 non-qualifiers. A MAC school will allow a Prop 48 player to attend college as a freshman, pay his own way and not participate in football. By remaining in good academic standing, an athlete can then receive a scholarship as a sophomore.

That may not be necessary for Howard, however. He said he needs to average a B in four of his five classes this semester to become qualified.

?I was close to Bs this nine-week period,? Howard said. ?I can do it. It?s just going to take some hard work.?

Picking either would mean a chance to play in the 'Shoe in 2011. Selfishly, I'm hoping for Akron so I'd have a chance to see several times over his career. Either way, this young man has really been through a ringer the last year so I'm hoping it works out as well as possible for him.

Hoover?s Erick Howard is still unsure of where he will attend college in the fall after making a verbal commitment to Akron.

NORTH CANTON ?

All the plays have been called. Erick Howard gained all the yards he could at North Canton Hoover High School. He won Ohio?s Mr. Football twice.

But he will have one final huddle with Hoover head coach Don Hertler Jr. The two plan to meet today to discuss Howard?s college options and his future as the Feb. 3 signing day creeps closer.

Howard verbally committed to the University of Akron, but he said Wednesday he is having second thoughts and will consider the University of Toledo. Or he could decide to go another route.

?I will probably decide before the weekend or during the weekend,? Howard said.

Running back Erick Howard, the two-time Ohio Mr. Football winner from North Canton Hoover High School, has made an oral commitment to the University of Akron, but he still might change his mind, according to published reports and sources at the Stark County school.

The 5-foot-11, 205-pound Howard recently committed to join new coach Rob Ianello's first Zips recruiting class. However, he took an official visit to the University of Toledo after that and might join the Rockets instead, sources said.
