Thurgood Marshall High School sophomore point guard Juwan Staten answered some of the DDN's questions on Thursday, Feb. 28, before Staten formally announced that he would continue his basketball career at the University of Dayton:

Q You chose Dayton over Xavier. Why?
A Basically the style of play and how comfortable I feel around the coaches, and the opportunity to step in and play as a freshman.

Q Why commit now instead of next year?
A Because I thought I'd get it out of the way and, while I'm feeling this way, I don't really think my feelings could change about Dayton. So let's get it out of the way and work to get better.

DAYTON ? Juwan Staten hasn't waffled since giving the University of Dayton a verbal commitment in March, but recruiters from other schools keep lurking just in case he does.
"I've had coaches talk to me from the Big Ten, Big East and ACC, but his verbal is definitely solid," said Bill Staten, Juwan's father. "When he made his decision, he knew this would happen. But he basically found the perfect fit in Dayton."

As much as I wouldn't mind seeing another local product lace up in the S&G, I'm happy he is sticking with UD. Never really been a big fan of there's, but this local infusion of talent is good for the Dayton area and team. Great to see Staten get this chance to go to an elite school like Oak Hill. Hopefully the Bucks step up there effort for Payne, but if UD is his destination then I know it'll be another good move by a local talent.

The only thing that makes me nervous as a UD fan is that Staten picked UD because he wanted to stay close to home.

Now he is moving out to Oak Hill....what if he decides he loves being away from home??

Like I said, the only way his parents let him go away to OHA was because they know he's coming back for college...

He really wants to be UD's first McD's AA and play in Cbus in '10... He felt like this was a good way to accomplish that...

Also, he will sign during the early period which will be before he even plays 5 games at Oak Hill...

So rest easy Flyer fans... :)
