Punters don't typically muff punts, since they don't usually play on the punt return team.

he was pointing out that a muffed punt is when the punt returner drops it, not when a punter kicks poorly. I believe the word you were looking for was shank.

Yeah, I know what he was pointing out. I was actually talking about the punter "muffing" it, not shanking it. I guess a more acceptable term would have been to say "fumble the snap". I should have thought twice before posting -- the last thing we need around here is people getting creative in how they describe a sports play.
