Bearcats' rise makes blue chips take note

"X" marks the spot where Ohio State and the University of Cincinnati have decided to go toe to toe for the first time in a while over a major recruit.

Blue-chip offensive lineman Matt James of Cincinnati St. Xavier is the target. In the good ol' days -- actually, just a few years ago -- the competition for him probably would have dissolved into Ohio State vs. Notre Dame.

As for Cincinnati ?

"I never tell my kids where to go to school," St. Xavier coach Steve Specht said this week. "But I will tell you what I don't say to my kids anymore: 'UC, I don't know, that coach might get fired. You've got to think about: Can you win there?'

"Instead, I look at Matt James and say, 'Shoot, you can't miss with Ohio State, and you can't miss with the University of Cincinnati. You've got a great setup either way.' "

UC also hasn't nailed down James, but Specht's point was that the Bearcats are at least in the conversation.

"Let's face it, more than anything, kids want to win, and you can win at Ohio State with Jim Tressel, and you can win at UC now," Specht said. "UC is in the national picture.

"What's sad, the reality of the situation and the black cloud that always is going to hang over the recruiting there at UC is, how long will Brian stay? You know Jim is going to stay at Ohio State."

I can't see how Kelly lasts at Cincy beyond two or three years from now. The SEC just is going to have too much money to throw at him.

The No. 3 prospect in the state of Ohio, offensive lineman Matt James from Cincinnati St. Xavier, is set to begin his official visits.

James will visit Florida this weekend and see the Gators take on Florida State. He then has an official visit scheduled to Notre Dame for the weekend of Dec. 5. The weekend of Dec. 12 James will be in Columbus for an official visit to Ohio State.

The other school on James' list is Cincinnati, however he has not yet scheduled an official visit with the Bearcats.

I think the UConn loss sealed the deal for Charlie. Hopefully they wait til later rather than sooner to let him go and maybe the 2010 prospects will go elsewhere b/c of the unknown. The longer they wait, the more the recruiting season disappears as well. They aren't going to settle for a no-name coach @ ND so if they name an heir to the ND coaching thrown early enough, they may keep a lot of their current recruits and get a few more of the guys that are currently on the fence, including Matt James. (I hope not)

James to visit UC in January
Posted by mdyer November 25th, 2009, 9:12 am

St. Xavier senior OL Matt James plans to take an official visit to UC in January, according to St. X coach Steve Specht.

James also has official visits scheduled for Notre Dame (Dec. 5), Ohio State (Dec. 12) and Florida (Dec. 19), according to Specht.

Bucknuts.com reported earlier in the week that James would attend the Florida State at Florida game this weekend in Gainesville. It indicated this weekend would be an official visit. But, I was told Tuesday night the Florida official visit is Dec. 19.

Offensive lineman Matt James (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) has postponed his official visit to Florida from this weekend when the Gators play Florida State to the weekend of Dec. 19.

The 6-foot-8 and 280-pound James' official visit scheduled now begins with a trip to Notre Dame the weekend of Dec. 5. He will then visit Ohio State the weekend of Dec. 12, followed by his trip to Gainesville. James will also visit Cincinnati sometime in January.

Of course if Charlie Weis were to be fired that could change things again for James as the Irish would likely postpone their official visits scheduled for the weekend of Dec. 5.

James waiting to see what happens
Posted by mdyer November 30th, 2009

St. Xavier senior OL Matt James is scheduled to make an official visit to Notre Dame this weekend (Dec. 5), but is waiting to see what happens with the Irish coaching situation, according to St. X coach Steve Specht.

Notre Dame announced this afternoon that Irish coach Charlie Weis has been dismissed.

James, who is 6 feet 7 and 290 pounds, has also scheduled official visits with Ohio State (Dec. 12), Florida (Dec. 19) and UC in January.

Specht said in an e-mail a few minutes ago that James doesn?t know whether he will take his official visit to South Bend this weekend.

?He really doesn?t know right now,? Specht said. ?They still want him to make the visit but I think he will wait until the dust settles a little.?
