Prep football: Michigan offers scholarship to Lexington star
By CURT CONRAD ? News Journal ? June 19, 2009

LEXINGTON -- A new contestant entered the Courtney Avery sweepstakes Thursday morning.

University of Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez threw his Maize and Blue hat into the ring, offering a scholarship to the blue-chipper from Lexington. Avery, who verbally committed to Stanford in April, can't sign a national letter of intent until February.

"I'm still (verbally) committed to Stanford," Avery said. "I spoke to (Stanford coach) Jim Harbaugh and I told him I still plan to take all five of my official visits and Michigan would be one of them.

"I'll go back and talk with my family and we'll decide what's best for me."

I think it was a good offer. They obviously liked what they saw at camp otherwise they wouldn't have offered, and he's a guy with potential that won't scare away the higher profile CB recruits they are going after.
This is true. You know what they say, you can never have too many 5-10, 165 pounders!

They must have loved what they saw at the camp because Courtney has barely played DB in games. He's the QB and plays a handful of series at corner. I just don't think the potential nor the probability of panning out at DB is good enough for the offer.

5-10 is good height for a CB first of all, and secondly he's only 16/17 years old, the 165 pounds means nothing. He still has plenty of time to put on some weight.

They did love what they saw, which is why they offered! I think the potential of panning out at DB is good enough. Some of the greatest CB's to ever play never even really played CB in high school. Charles Woodson was primarily a RB when he played high school ball in Ohio, and he turned out to be arguably the best CB that the B10 conference has ever seen.

I think what is most important for the CB position is athleticism and flexibility, i.e. does the player in question have the quickness, the flexible hips, and the recovery speed needed to play CB. I think obviously the Michigan staff felt like he had all of those tools and that given time they could mold him into a solid player at CB.

Clearly my post went over your head. The point isn't whether he can play corner or not, it's that Michigan is loading up athletes that are all the same size and thinking they'll either play wide receiver or defensive back. Might want to think about some linebackers and linemen, games are still won and lost at the line of scrimmage chief.

Word is Florida might be looking to get involved with Avery...D.J. Durkin was just hired by Florida but he was heavily involved with recruiting Avery while he was at Stanford (and while Avery was committed there).

over under on *ichigan fans getting even more excited if they lose Avery to Florida because it shows that they are competing with top programs for recruits?

I guarantee there will be posts to that effect if it happens
