Recruiting Bulletin - Duane Long's OSU Buckeyes Football Report

Posted by Duane Long on May 6, 2009 at 5:15pm

We have a new name on the board. Fre'Shad Hunter from Cary, North Carolina. He is a Rivals top 100 player with offers from LSU, Tennessee and Florida State. He looks like a clone of Melvin Fellows. One of the Buckeye coaches has been down to take a look. Grades will determine an offer. He still has some work to do but I think he will make it. I am not at liberty to say why, but the Buckeyes could be in a good situation with him.

#93 in the newest Rivals 100.

Hmmm, very intriguing. Good to see another big DL name come up. I would imagine he is a DT candidate if he already about 250 and runs a 4.9+, which is great because I was getting a little nervous here.

Duane Long seems to hint that if we offer we have a connection to the school or kid that may actually put us in a very good spot to land him.

Never do I remember a year where so many big name kids want an OSU offer but are either waiting or not gettting one.

Prater
Gholston
TJ (OT in south)
Donnel
and so on.........

Unfortunately.. OSU does not have that many offers to give this year. They seem to be doing their due diligence on each offer they hand out.

And here's his ESPN evaluation...

Fre'Shad Hunter - College Football Recruiting 2010 - ESPN

Evaluation

Hunter is a bit of sleeper in the 2010 class at the defensive end position, but he is an easy kid to like. He has good size and looks like a thickly built kid on film. He comes across as a pretty heady player who works to do some of the little things that can help him be successful. He is very good with his hands and always using his weapons to help keep himself protected. He is tough at the point of attack. Displays the ability to come out of his stance, shot his hands, derive power from his lower body and take on a block and hold his ground. He continually works to maintain some separation from blockers, will get hands on the blocker and squeeze when he man goes down inside. Works to stay square and keep the ball in front of him. He is a solid wrap-up tackler and because he will generate power from his lower body he is capable of delivering a pop. Displays good explosiveness out of his stance, but you would like to see him be more consistent here. Has solid straight line speed. As a pass rusher he can get into the blocker, punch, and knock him out of his cylinder. He will try and attack the outside shoulder and use his hands to swat at and work past the blocker. Flashes the ability to get his hips turned some and work past. Hunter is a good football player. May be a little better football player then he is a pure athlete, but the kid can be productive. Good size and an effort to play smart should allow him to be a productive college defender.

BN $ - Tressel, Pryor Score Points With Star Defensive End

5/11

By BK...has offers from the likes of LSU, North Carolina State, Florida State, Tennessee, Michigan, Oregon, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Syracuse and South Carolina...wants to make OSU one of his officials after reading The Winner's Manual...favors NC State.

That's pretty dang cool. I didn't know high school kids read anymore.

LSU has offered and that's about all I need to know. Don't know how many DE's we can take...we have Durham and Moore with an outside shot (or mediocre) at Gholston. I say offer Hunter and worry about what Gholston does later. I though Fre'Shad looked pretty quick in the video posted earlier today in 1 on 1's and he has room to put on good weight. Like the ESPN eval mentioned, his lower body strength is great and it looks like he has a powerful trunk too.

Michigan is his most recent offer...talks about NC State stands out...plans to visit South Carolina, UF and FSU this summer...names a top five of NC State, Florida State, LSU, Tennessee and South Carolina.

Any chance he converts to DT? Looks like a good candidate for it to me, especially considering we appear to have massive depth at DE, both on board already and in this class... And DT is scary thin.

Certainly imo. I think he can be a big strong side end or a quick tackle. He has the frame for either. This is one case where I actually wouldn't mind seeing us play him at either spot. I like him as a strong side end for now though.
