Pack still on top
North Carolina State is still the solid leader for ESPNU 150 defensive end Fre'Shad Hunter (Cary, N.C./Cary). He was on campus for an unofficial visit Thursday night when the Wolfpack played host to South Carolina. Florida State, LSU, Florida and Ohio State are the four other programs Hunter mentioned as being possible official visit destinations.
Here is my top 10 list of Buckeye recruits still on the board:
8 - Fre'Shad Hunter
Just get your grades squared away big fella. There will be a place for you.
Cary coach Ben Kolstad suspended a number of starters before last week's 34-5 loss to Middle Creek. One of them was his most highly-touted player, offensive/defensive lineman Fre'Shad Hunter.
However, Hunter will not be returning to the team. While other starters were suspended for missing practice, Hunter broke an undisclosed team rule.
Hunter’s mother and Kolstad met, and decided it would be best for Fre’Shad to sit out the rest of the year.
“What happened is, there were some team rules broken, and it kind of became a mutual decision between me and his mom that he was going to focus on academics and nothing else,” Kolstad said.
The senior ranks among the best players in the state and recently committed to N.C. State. He projects as a defensive lineman at the next level, and is ranked by major recruiting databases Scout.com and Rivals.com as a four-star player.
“It’s probably not easy for him, but he’s doing fine,” Kolstad said. “This is something that we’ve been talking about for awhile anyway. It’s not that sudden of a thing for him. He’s handled it well I think.”
The Imps are 4-4 (2-3) heading into this Friday's game at home against Lee County. Hunter, meanwhile, will spend his time readying himself for college.
“He’s just preparing for next year,” Kolstad said. “And this gives him a chance to work on his academics and get himself prepared physically and mentally for next year.”

Jim Young of ACCSports.com confirms that prized defensive end recruit Fre'Shad Hunter will not attend North Carolina State, where he had previously been a verbal commit.
"Looks like academics were an issue," Young writes on his blog.
Hunter dropped off his team at Cary High as a senior to concentrate on the books.
"Right now, it is a little up in the air," said Hunter's prep coach, Ben Kolstad. "I expect he'll go to a prep school or a junior college."
Hunter was listed at 6-foot-4, 245. Rivals had him as a four-star recruit, so it's quite a loss for the Wolfpack.
Hunter could always resurface with N.C. State after the JUCO or prep school process.

Share Cary defensive end Fre'Shad Hunter will not sign with N.C. State, Cary head coach Ben Kolstad told HighSchoolOT.com on Wednesday morning.
"He's not going to sign with them right now for various reasons," Kolstad said. "He's looking at possibly junior college, possibly something else."
The 6-foot-5, 250-pound lineman is a four-star prospect, according to Rivals.com. The recruiting Web site ranks Hunter as the 19th best defensive end in the Class of 2010 and the 11th best overall prospect in the state.
At his signing day press conference, Wolfpack head coach Tom O'Brien said he could not comment on players that have not signed with N.C. State, but he said they are still actively recruiting Hunter.
Hunter did not finish the season with the Imps after being suspended for the season in late October. At the time, Cary principal Doug Thilman told HighSchoolOT.com that Hunter faced the suspension for a violation of team rules. However, Hunter remained in school at Cary.
During his junior season, Hunter recorded 60 tackles and had seven sacks. Statistics for his senior season were not immediately available, but he played most of his senior season on the offensive line.
