10 coolest unique traditions - cfbnews

my favorite part of the Sooner Schooner tradition is when the Miami Hurricanes mascot Sebastian made up a red wagon up like the schooner. then he set it on fire and dragged it around the endzone... that was all-time classic shit... i wish i could find a pic...

hmm... that made me think... Miami is probably the only school that has a tradition of the mascot getting unsportsmanlike conduct penalties...

thats because all miami people like to break laws/rules, come to think of it, how did he start the fire, i bet he stole Florida State's Flaming Spear

lets see, let me add up the laws broken there

1. Arson
2. Theft

yep sounds just like miami

The Schooner is a symbol from the "Land Run" of 1889. This is where there was a big starting line and everyone could use their own means to get to a place they wanted land and stake their claim. Most people that had horses, also had schooners to help them and their families travel.

The term Sooner is originated from people who started the night before the Land Run to stake claim to land before everyone else was allowed to start.

There you have the story of the "Sooner Schooner." Let's celebrate cheating honest families out of the best and most fertile farmland.

I was born and raised in Oklahoma City so this is legit. The NCAA needs to ban that name and mascot!

Quite true. This explains their moniker of 'Land Thieves'.

I remember a game in the late 90's where the F$U Spear Chucker threw it in a Bowl Game. Seems the artificial turf didn't take well to being stabbed. Or maybe the stadium caretaker didn't take it too well. Big hoopla for a few minutes on the sidelines - much apologizing by the Semenhole uppity ups. Many smiles by everyone around watching that day - all happy for Free Shoes U's embarrassment.

I'm going to say that the Wisky "jump around" makes it. If you have been in Camp Randell stadium when they play that f***ing song...then you understand. I was in the upperdeck in 2003. I thought the stadium was going to colapse. I don't care if it is only 12 years old. It's pretty sweet, as much as I hate Wisconsin.
It's probably a much bigger deal when the Buckeyes hit town, but at the Illinois game last year, it was a real dud. The student section participated, but that was about it.

1. Michigan Losing Atleast Three Games a Year!!!
A great tradition started by many coaches before, this is one Old Lloyd keeps going. Lloyd has said "We never lose three games in a year", but history seems not to see the same as him. Another tradition is your star WR and Captain saying "We Suck!".
2004: 9-3-0
2003: 10-3-0
2002: 10-3-0
2001: 8-4-0
2000: 9-3-0
1998: 10-3
1996: 8-4
1995: 9-4

this is what i just posted over at a michigan fan site, can anybody think of any other michigan site's, i could only find one, and it was well, it sucked!

Here's a write up for ya...

1. Michigan’s The 3rd Loss
While Texas A&M may have it’s 12th Man, Michigan has The 3rd Loss. There is some dispute about when this tradition actually started, but most agree it was Coach Gary Moelller’s 3rd year in 1993 when Michigan went 8-4. The 3rd Loss came on Oct. 23 against Illinois in Ann Arbor. The fans really took to the new tradition. “We really needed something to set us apart from the rest.” said Raoul Fucnopusse, Professor of Italian-American Trans-gender/Gay and Lesbian Studies and long time maize and blue athletic supporter. "This is the kind of tradition even the lowest of the low among us can feel a part of.” When Michigan’s next coach, Llloyd Carr, was hired he pledged in front of a capacity crowd at Crisler Area “In 325 days, in State College Pennsylvania, we will have The 3rd Loss!” He did not let the faithful down. That year against Penn State, Michigan grabbed The 3rd Loss in one of the greatest games in Michigan’s glorious history, successfully deferring success by a score of 27-17. However, in 1997, Llloyd Carr seemed to forget about this storied tradition. The maize and blue went 12-0. This drew the predictable ire from the alums and dropouts and other people who have no direct link to the University, but still buy the T-shirts and hats. Llloyd Carr again pledged he would continue with the tradition. In 2001, Coach Carr decided that the tradition was so well liked he needed to do something extra. He decided The 3rd Loss needed to happen in the biggest game of the year. That year, his highly touted Michigan team achieved The 3rd Loss in front of a packed “Big House” against the team’s most hated rival, Ohio State. Since then, Michigan either got The 3rd Loss against Ohio State or in their bowl game, including grabbing The 3rd Loss in two straight Rose Bowls, only adding to the pageantry and lore of this great tradition. There are no signs of this tradition ending any time soon and while Ohio State will continue to "Dot the i" and Texas A&M will have it's 12th Man, Michigan’s The 3rd Loss tradition will continue to rank as the greatest in all of college football. And the Michigan Wolllverine crazies willl continue to proudllly cheer their bellloved coach "Llloyd". Go Blllue!!!

Edit Reason: Spellled Blllue wrong. :)

I think some of you are taking this out of context. Maybe its just my opinion, I dunno, but Wisky's 'Jump Around' is definetly one of the Coolest traditions in CFB. Its very exciting and they will keep doing it, thus tradition, however short it maybe.

The artical does not annoint the best / deepest traditions, but the "coolest unique" ones.

whats cool about a bunch a drunken fans with a rep of bad behavior all acting like they had too much sugar. If thats all it takes to be a cool tradition then why not their "5th quarter" where the band stays on the field after a post game performance and just runs around randomly like fools. By the way my sister was in TBDBITL and cant stand Wisky after a home game which the wisky band tried to do the 5th quarter in the Shoe while our band was waiting to do their post game, I guess they basically marched right at them making wisky's band scatter.

While i think your heart is in the right place I must disagree, there is NOTHING more annoying than boomer sooner!!!

I think that's what I was saying. The schooner is annoying, but their fight song is even more annoying. In my opinion it's the second most annoying fight song, trailing only scUM.

Of course, "The Victors" sounds much better with the modified OSU-friendly lyrics.

from the article said:
Honorable mention

Arkansas: Hog call
Razorback fans spontaneously "Call the Hogs." The fans raise both hands high into the air, fingers waving as the volume increases during the word Woooooooooo. The arms pump down on the word "Pig" and then back into the air on the word "Sooie." "Woooooooooo, Pig! Sooie!"

Is it just me, or does this one just sound stupid? Maybe it's one of those that you just have to see to appreciate.
