10 coolest unique traditions - cfbnews

The 12th man is pretty cool, and it's the only one that is directly involved with the game.

And it would be crazy to say anything bad about the Army-Navy traditions.

But I would have preferred that the dotting of the 'I' came before Chief Osceola. And that Tomahawk Chop is really annoying.

I can see that, but the truth is that they serve the same purpose of firing up the crowd before the game, one just involves fire while the other a sousaphone(sp?)

here's a little more on it

Player Number 12
Yet another tradition of the Twelfth Man is the Twelfth man kick off team. A member of the student body is chosen from the hundreds that apply to play on the defense when the Aggies kick the ball. Always wearing the number 12 on his jersey, the twelfth man plays in the original spirit of E. King Gill.

i looked at their roster and there doesn't seem to be a #12 on the team

...Can't be more than 20 years, plus the song is pretty obnoxious.

Well, seeing as the song came out in mid-1992...

That's because the person they select is a "variable walk-on", and changes from week to week. They can't put a #12 on the roster if they don't know who it will be...

Am I the only one that that thinks Wisconsin's jump around doesnt belong on this list?

Have you ever seen it? Ever seen it LIVE? I love that tradition. It's something that the fans REALLLLLLLY get into.

I also dig the Flaming spear, though I thought they only chucked it into the ground during the Miami game.

I like most college football traditions, that is why I like college football.

(though I always thought the boomer schooner or whatever, is kind of...uh... gay.)

well here's the official website and roster

you would think they would put the name of the "12th. Man" on there when they put the updated roster every week, or they could atleast put #12 and put the name as 12th. Man

Texas A&M Postgame Notes

  • Today’s win by the Aggies broke a 14-game losing streak when A&M is even or loses the turnover battle. A&M and Baylor both had two turnovers.
  • The Aggies didn’t average the 250/250 passing/rushing that they came into the game with, but they were still balanced with 155 rushing yards and 132 passing yards.
  • The Aggies improved to 5-4 in overtime games (1-1 vs. Baylor). It marked the first time A&M has played overtime games in consecutive years against the same opponent.
  • For the first time in 2005, wide receiver Chad Schroeder touched the football without producing a touchdown. He had five touchdowns on five touches coming into today’s game.
  • Senior Todd Pegram missed his first field goal try of the season when his 37-yard attempt went wide in the third quarter. Pegram came into the game with five FGs on five tries this season, and having hit 21 of his last 22 three-point tries. He rebounded with a 25-yarder to send the game into overtime.
  • Senior offensive lineman Jami Hightower made his first start this season, and his first career start at offensive guard.
  • True freshman tight end Martellus Bennett made his first career start.
  • Reggie McNeal’s first quarter interception was his second of the season and his first since the season-opener against Clemson. It broke a 55 attempt interception-free streak.
  • Baylor’s first-drive field goal marked the first time this season that the Aggies have allowed points on the opponent’s initial drive of the game. The previous three first drives ended with punts.
  • Game captains for the Aggies were QB Reggie McNeal, WR DeQawn Mobley, TE Boone Stutz and LB Archie McDaniel.
  • The 12th Man for the third straight game was John Ray, a junior walk-on from Giddings, Texas. It is the 16th time that Ray has been the Aggies’ 12th Man.

i have always wondered what would happen if the flaming spear that fsu throws into the ground would fall over. ya know how the guy always throws it into the ground so it stands up vertically and is on fire. surely at least once the spear has not stood up straight and fell over. i wonder what happens then...

Bobby Bowden sends out his back-up punter to the field thats on fire to sacrifice himself to the Seminole tribe

but really i don't think that it has ever happened, but i would think it is considered bad luck, just like if the drum major at osu drops the batton when he throws it over the goal post
