Game Thread #1 tOSU at Washington, Sat. Sept. 27th, 3:30 ET, CBS

Once they lost their LT it was over for them. The DL took over the game in the second half.

Were a bit loose across the middle in the intermediate but you could tell the objective was to stop the run.

What a performance by the defense though overall. Very impressed with their ability to tighten up inside the 5 yard line that’s for sure.

This was the offense that I thought could give us the most trouble. Absolutely the QB who could give us the most trouble and we did that to him? Pretty special stuff by the defense. I think Malone has played well btw and with Houston continuing to make dumb mistakes that’s a great thing.

Eh the first one felt pretty cut and dry. The last one I 100% agree though.

Side note: I'm waiting for ACC to get a really tough one to see the decision making on one of those. The access has been awesome, but the games I've seen, the reviews have all been pretty obvious.
He was clearly short on the first one, and the fact they marked it a first down was nonsense. But what angle showed definitive proof he wasn't short.... because that's the bar.

Few things more…

This OL is chippy and they really finish people. Very different than past seasons and how good has Austin been at left tackle? Literally haven’t heard a peep from him all year which is obviously great.

Also, I thought McClain had a great game. Quietly though I think IGB has just been vital for this defense. Chasing down that long TD run, picks up the TE on that seam route catch when UW was gearing up to score again, throwing offensive lineman. Insanely physical for a corner but how great has he been this year?

Our DL which was most people's biggest concern going into the year, was a strength today and that is with Houston underperforming. Pleased thus far with Malone and Smith Jr. Sonny and Arvelle are cyborgs and I'm really impressed with Iggy's vast improvement with coverage. Only one hold over four games. If he stays on course he might just get his dream of being drafted in the first round.

This defense is truly impressive and playing complementary football. Not many subs today but this was an away game against a good team.

Every season they act like it’s very important that they have definitive proof and every season they obviously don’t follow that formula. Fucking annoying.

Here are excerpts from Fisch's opening coments:

It was 7-3 at halftime ... We had one possession in the third quarter, one seven-play drive that ended in a field goal ... It felt like a very fast game, didn't feel like a lot of possessions....

There were a lot of valid reasons for Ohio State to play a low-scoring, grind-it-out game against Washington (see specifically the posts by @buchtelgrad04 ). A further reason was for the Buckeyes to impose their will on the Huskies. Washington wanted a fast-paced game with many scoring opportunities, not a "very fast game" with few possessions. Washington's only real hope was to win a shoot out, and having "one seven-play drive that ended in a field goal" in the third quarter was definitely not in their recipe for success. For the entire second half, Washington ran only 23 plays for 89 yards (3.9 average) and scored just three points. The Buckeyes ran 38 plays for 209 yards (5.5 average, but with a long of just 19 yards, meaning consistent gains with no big plays) and scored 17 points while bleeding the life out of their opponent. Tresselball triumphs again!
