Game Thread #1 Ohio State vs. #8 Wisconsin, 2019 B1G Championship Game (Lucas Oil Stadium Dec 7 8:00 PM Fox)

I have never been accused of optimism, but if there was ever a trap game, this would be it.

It is always way more challenging to win when the hype gets thick. The hype could not be thicker. CFP #1. 3 Heisman candidates. Undefeated. Coach of the Year.

And then there is the Bucky revenge factor. Blew up Bucky last time. Insulted Bucky by players doing the jump around.

Here's hoping Ryan Day has it under control, because this all is a recipe for disaster.

There is no reason for anyone to still have a chip on their shoulder.

Okay, we did not have to pay the ultimate price, but the first half did not go so well.

Fortunately, as others have pointed out, the Clemson game will not be a trap game ... have lost the last three, Wisky helped give us urgency in our efforts to address our own weaknesses, Vegas is against us, ....

And that morning on GameDay when he said, "I would never send my kids to play in a Jim Tressel offense."

You know... before Jim Tressel's offense produced a Heisman winning QB, a 1st round perennial All-Pro C, and three 1st round NFL WRs.

Just sayin': That's not much of a loss. According to 24/7 his 2 twins (Tye and Jake) weren't offered a scholarship by anybody. Not that they aren't great kids, they just aren't great football players. Currently they are walk-ons at Clemson. If I had to guess, their main contribution to the Clemson football team is that they help raise the team's GPA....

WHERE'S WALDO? Technology is probably going to kill us all eventually, but sometimes it does some pretty sweet things – like photograph an entire stadium in extremely high detail in a scrollable 3D panorama.

A special yet-to-be-named (and decided) prize awaits the first individual to find my estranged father amongst the game-goers. He'll be the midlife-crisisy fellow with the beard that he's absolutely lost things in.

Failing that, you can attempt to find Colin and Dan in the press box, but that's not an easy task either (and there's no special prize).

The Grumpy Old Buckeye: Ohio State vs. Wisconsin II

IMG_1986.jpg

You’re supposed to save your best for last, but Ohio State saved its worst game of the season for the Big Ten Championship Game, falling behind 21-7 in the first half before rallying with 27 consecutive points in the second half. There was a lot to be grumpy about, but I’m just going to hit the highlights (lowlights?) because otherwise you’d be reading this column for several days. Let’s get to the stuff that would have had a much richer version of me shooting my television.

Big Play to Open the Game
The Buckeyes wasted no time showing they weren’t ready for Wisconsin’s best shot. Wisconsin opened the game with a 27-yard completion on the first play and it set the tone for the Badger offense and the Buckeye defense. Ohio State seemed to struggle to recover, looking unsure, missing tackles, and generally appearing unsettled and on their heels.

Taylor’s Response
After being held in check the first two times he faced Ohio State, Jonathan Taylor came into this game wanting to make a statement and did that early. He had a 44-yard touchdown run to open the scoring, further giving Wisconsin life and belief. Jeff Okudah was the last guy to have a shot at him but made an awful attempt to bring down the runner and just like that Taylor practically ran for more yards in one play than he did in Columbus during the first meeting.

Your Weekly Reminder that Chrisman is Broken
Tired: Drue Chrisman booting his punts into the end zone.

Wired: Drue Chrisman going back to doing what he used to do. He hasn’t done that much since before the first Wisconsin game.

I’ve been riding this particular gripe train ever since the first Wisconsin game, but once again Chrisman had an opportunity to pin back an opponent and booted a punt into the end zone. However, he might have gotten his groove back with a perfect pass on a fake punt (even if the Buckeyes didn’t finish the drive). Late in the game he actually did force a fair catch inside the 20, so let’s hope he’s finally back.

The Whiff
Jashon Cornell missed what looked like a sure sack on third-and-9 on second Wisconsin scoring drive, getting his hands on Jack Coan deep in the backfield, but he lost his grip and allowed a long scramble for a first down. Just a couple of plays later, Coan walked into the end zone with no trouble on a zone read keeper that fooled everyone in a white jersey. Making that sack probably saves the Buckeyes a touchdown.

Trying To Do Too Much Can Be Costly
Ohio State had a third down play in the red zone and Wisconsin got pressure that forced Justin Fields to run. But once he was wrapped up, he tried to fight through the entire Badger defense and lost the ball. That cost Ohio State points as Fields could simply have gone down and taken the field goal. By trying to make what was just about an impossible play — even if he had two healthy knees — it cost the Buckeyes and helped the Badgers.

Awful Response
Ohio State finally scored a touchdown to get back into the game and Wisconsin seemed OK with taking their touchdown lead to the half. But then the Buckeyes gave up a 45-yard rush by Taylor on a simple run play right before the half that led to a third Wisconsin touchdown. The Badgers weren’t even trying to score necessarily. But when Ohio State gave up the big play, the Badgers got aggressive, picked on backup cornerback Cameron Brown and then made it 21-7 just before the break. It was the most demoralizing 32-second sequence of the entire season. If the Buckeyes had simply made a tackle for an average three to five yards on that run, they’d have gone to the half down just seven points.

Failing to Take Full Advantage
Ohio State scored a touchdown to start the third quarter and then got a huge sack of Coan on third down on the ensuing drive. Things looked even better when Wisconsin’s punter dropped the snap and set up the Buckeyes in the red zone. But then the Buckeyes went with a gadget play on first down, a run, and then should have at least converted for a first down — if not a touchdown — when Fields misfired to a wide open tight end in the flat with a lot of green in front of him. Instead of seven points, Ohio State settled for three and that was a big win for the Badgers.

Wint’s Dumb Penalty; Arnette’s Dumb Penalty
The Buckeyes handed Wisconsin 30 yards for free on the same drive in the form of a couple of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Jahsen Wint’s came on the kickoff after Ohio State had climbed back into the game and Damon Arnette’s was a few plays later. The defense eventually got a stop and the Badgers missed a field goal on the drive, but that was not a good time for some discipline issues, whether the calls were soft or not.

Suplex is for Wrestling Only
K.J. Hill got picked up and slammed down on an overhead suplex move that would have made Hulk Hogan proud. That is supposed to be illegal and could have ended Hill’s season. Thankfully, he was OK and set the school record for career receptions and then later scored a go-ahead touchdown on a play where Garrett Wilson got away with not being set at the snap. I’ll take the no-call on Wilson since there was no call on the Hill suplex.

Just sayin': Those two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties were dumb, could have been "a game changer", and should be addressed before the next game.

Buckeyes Show Grit, Playing Through Adversity To Win

Jordan-Fuller-Chase-Young-4th-Down.jpg

The pressure of playing from behind and playing through adversity was something Ohio State had talked about and prepared for all season, but it was never something they had to experience… until Saturday.

For the first time this season the Buckeyes had to fight through a deficit and had to come back to win a game.

“To go down the way we did, come back and play in the second half, yeah, I think you’ve seen our talent, our execution, a lot of things, but today showed our team’s heart,” head coach Ryan Day said. “I think that’s what makes this the best win of the year.”

Day warned his team and coaching staff this week that at one point in Ohio State’s 38-7 win against Wisconsin in October, the score was 10-7 in the third quarter. But his group responded to that moment with four unanswered touchdowns.

This time Wisconsin took the 21-7 lead into halftime. Before Saturday, the Buckeyes’ biggest deficit all season was 6-0 at Michigan after the first drive of the game in Ann Arbor.

The Buckeyes had also never trailed at halftime until Saturday. This was a new feeling for Day entering the locker room. The pressure to respond was upon him.

“Was I nervous? Yeah, I was a little nervous, yeah. We had a group of guys in that locker room who were barking at each other that they weren’t going to leave this place without a win,” Day said. “Then we all got together and said, This is like life, it isn’t always going to work out the way you want it. The challenge was we were going to find out what was really made inside of us. I think you saw that.”

The third quarter was quite a comeback for Ohio State. From the moment the Buckeyes came out of the tunnel after halftime the momentum shifted in Lucas Oil Stadium.

“The first real time face adversity, we’re losing in a game — because that was the big question mark in my mind, what were we going to do down two scores at halftime? We don’t know. The way we responded in that third quarter was unbelievable,” Day said. “You could feel the electricity in the stadium. We imposed our will. I think that goes to show you how special this team is.”

I had genuine concerns we wouldn't have much left after the Big Ten scheduler screwed us with the Ped State/scUM finish. We looked gassed in the first half and I was throwing things and doing too much yelling at the tv. The coaches found a cure for that and we came out for the second half with determination to finish. And it was an amazing finish! One for the ages.

Seriously? Lol. He basically writes his own contract. He's the best at what he does and because he's not a complete Homer, you clowns whine. Grow up.

Say what you will, but were it the case that he never appeared on screen again, do you really think that anyone would miss him? Has he honestly added incremental insight to any broadcast he’s been a part of in the past ten years?

Homer or not, the guy is nothing more than a vapid body in front of a camera. In comparison, were things like Urban Analysis as empty of insight, do you think that would fly?

Seriously, all history aside, give us some credit in being able to recognize him for what he is — a hyperbole-filled windbag.

It was uncomfortable to watch in the stadium. Frankly, it looked worse in the stadium than it did on TV. The team looked flat to me during warm ups and the energy on the sidelines to start the game just wasn’t there. I think the team and honestly, most of the stadium, expected tOSU to roll. That said, @OHSportsFan and I were texting during the game, and while it was no fun being down, everything we were seeing looked correctable. I cannot recall a time, being down 14, that I have ever been as relaxed as I was Saturday night.

The only thing that concerned me throughout the first half is the amount of time Wisky was taking up with their drives. That limited, or could limit, the number of touches we were getting in the game. Once the D found their stride and we saw some 3 and outs, all was right with the world.

Couldn't find myself because I wasn't there.

But I did find the GD Nacho Bitch!!

Had to go see her mom she said. And sitting with one of the vendors who roam the stands selling sodas at The Shoe. They are the lowest of the low when it comes to stadium vendors. Even the folks who sweep out the stands after the game are thought of more highly.

You whore!!!
